Personal Statement

I am looking for a position in an institution where I can continue to learn and apply my skills as an Instructor. I have a strong passion for helping adult learners reach their language learning goals, and I believe that I possess the right skills and experience for a teaching position at your school. In 2012, I enrolled in the TEFL Certificate Program at Vancouver Community College. As part of my certificate requirements, I completed a 25-hour practicum as a Teachers Assistant at Pacific Immigrant Resou rces Society. During my practicum, I earned positive feedback from my sponsor teacher, my practicum supervisor, and the students. My role during the lessons: My roles during the lessons were to facilitate, by making sure the students were focused on the task at hand, and understood the instructions given by the instructor. I also worked with some of the students one-on-one and checked their homework. I participated in many of the activities and interacted with the students, which gave me the chance to observe how the students learned and how they responded to the way the instructor taught the lessons. During group discussions, I asked questions to get the more introverted students talking and to keep the group engaged. The most important lessons I learned from the classroom observation: The first thing I learned is that immigrant students are very eager to learn English because they d ont want to make mistakes in front of native English speakers; they work hard to improve their English, so they can be proud of themselves. It is important to always give students praise because it gives them confidence. The second thing I learned is its important to use different language learning activities in your lessons to keep the students engaged, especially when a class is longer than 2 hours, its hard to stay focused. And the final thing I learned is that some students are at different levels and not all of them come to class consistently. Every student has different learning styles and some of them need extra help. Currently, I tutor ESL to an adult learner through Vancouver Community Colleges Homefront Learning. I embrace every opportunity to use the skills I have learned and I enjoy teaching English in all contexts. I am flexible and adaptable and my teaching style is student centered, active, and engaging. I enjoy working as part of a team, but I can also work independently. Education: TEFL Certificate Program at Vancouver Community College, September 2012 Jan 2014.
