General Linguistics Course Description Course Instructor: Dr.

Azza Abdeen Objectives: Linguistics is currently undergoing interesting decticalvelopments connected with new research areas tools. This course is a broad overview of linguistics to grasp the general concepts and controversies in this discipline. This course is designed to give the students a survey of general Linguistics ranging from the scientific definition of language to the study of the various levels of linguistic analysis (i.e. phonology, grammar, morphology, semantics). The following topics will be dealt with over the two terms: Term1: 1. Some basic concepts in Linguistics: A brief survey of the following: linguistics as the scientific study of language, characteristics of human language, differences between form and meaning, speech and writing synchronic and diachronic studies, langue and parole, Chomesks theory of language 2. Phonology (structures and Systems): The concepts of phoneme and its various definition, some phonological features of classic Arabic will be discusses 3. Words and word-formation processes: Coinage; Borrowing; Compounding; Blendind: Clipping; Backformation; Conversion, Acronyms: Study Derivation 4. Morphology The structure of morphemes, problem in morphological description. 1. Schools of Grammar: Students will be introduced to different schools of Grammar surveying traditional, structural, and functional approaches to the study of grammer Term2 Semantics and Pragmatics The evolutionary aspect of linguistics is clearly visible in the approach to pragmatics, which encompasses different aspects of communication, context, and social factors and contemporary focus on the

importance, updating of contextual assumptions, meaning construction, and implicated meaning reflects the changing tendencies in language studies.
