Salary Report
For Academic Year 2012-2013
Each year the Committee on the Economic Status of the Profession of the Syracuse
University Chapter of the American Association of University Professors reports on the
economic status of Syracuse University faculty. John Brule, Pat Cihon, Can Isik, and Joanna
Masingila prepared this years report. The raw data on salary and fringe benefits were provided
by the SU administration, through the Senate Budget Committee. The database is the same as
that used by the administration in preparing its December 2012 report for the AAUP National
office.
This years report is a streamlined report due to retirements and less active roles of those
involved in preparing the report. To be able to provide future salary reports, we need the help of
other AAUP members. Persons interested in assisting with the AAUP Salary report should
contact Can Isik (cisik@syr.edu) or Joanna Masingila (jomasing@syr.edu). To join AAUP, see
the membership form at the end of this report.
Two general observations about the data are that there is quite a range of salaries across
colleges/schools and departments, and there is range from 3.1% to 5.4% of the average percent
change across colleges/schools. Table 1 is a summary report for the last two years of average
compensation for all faculty members. Table 2 is a summary report for the last two years of
average salary for continuing faculty members. Table 3 shows the 2012-2013 salaries and tenure
status of full-time faculty members.

Total University
NUMBER, 2013the number of regular faculty members in this unit in the academic year
2012-2013. It excludes those on leave and visiting appointments.
2.
MAXIMUM, MINIMUM, MEDIAN and MEAN, 2013refer to the salary figures for the
faculty members counted in NUMBER, 2013.
3.
NUMBER, 2012the number of faculty members currently in this academic unit who
were in this unit last year, and also were not on leave last year. It is not a count of the total
faculty members in this unit last year.
4.
MEAN, 2012the mean salary in 2011-2012 for the faculty members who comprise
NUMBER, 2012. Thus, it may be a different figure than the mean salary for 2011-2012 in
last years report since it is the mean for last year for those faculty members still in the unit.
5.
PCT RAISE, MEANpercent change from MEAN, 2012. It compares the 2012-2013
salaries of all who are presently in the unit to the 2011-2012 salaries of those who were in
the unit then and are still in it. That is, it suggests, in connect with PCT RAISE, NOT PRO,
how continuing non-promoted members of this unit fared relative to those hired or
promoted into this unit.
6.
NUMBER NOT PROMOTEDcounts the faculty members in this academic unit who had
the same rank last year and this year.
7.
PCT RAISE, NOT PROthe percent raise for the faculty members in this academic unit
who had the same rank last year and this year.
8.
TOTAL 2012-2013counts the number of persons who were in the particular academic
unit both last year and this year. If a faculty member received a promotion at the end of the
year, that faculty member is listed in the column appropriate to his or her rank before
promotion.
9.
PCT RAISE OF RANKmeasures how all members who were in the unit last year and are
still at SU fared, whether promoted or non-promoted. In connection with PCT RAISE,
NOT PRO, it suggests how the non-promoted fared vis--vis the promoted.
