Lesson Plan Format Angie Tays Grade Level- Kindergarten Lesson Objective: Children will understand that by adding

one to any number you get the next number on the number line.

IN State Standards: MA.K.1 2000 - Number Sense Students understand the relationship between numbers and quantities up to 10, and that a set of objects has the same number in all situations regardless of the position or arrangement of the objects.
IN Indicator: MA.K.1.7 2000 Find the number that is one more than or one less than any whole number up to 10. Content: Counting 1-10, adding 1 to another number, recognizing numbers go up on the number line from zero. Materials: computer, websites for learning games, number line, counting bears, gummy bears & counting book, worksheet I. Motivation- I will show the children the number line and explain to them we will get to eat the same amount of Gummy Bears that we will count. Goal for Learner- Today you are going to learn how to count by adding one to any number and learn to use and understand the number line to help you with your addition skills. Procedure New Information- Here I will show the number line. I will tell the children that this will help them learn to count. Checking for Understanding- For this part I will have the children use the website www.abcya.com to complete a 1-10 connect the dots game. Modeling- I will now introduce the counting bears to the children. I will set one down and ask them how many I have. I will show them the number one on the number line and reinforce that I have one bear. I will then say I am adding 1 to my 1, how many bears do I have now? I will show them the number 2 on the number line and tell them by adding 1 to my one I now have 2. I will do this with them like this (modeling for them) through three.

Guided Practice- I will have the children get together into groups of two and work together with a total of 10 counting bears and a number line. I will have them work all the numbers 1-10. Checking for Understanding- We will go through the number line together and I will ask for volunteers to move the bears to complete the addition problems. Practice- I will have the children work in pairs at the computer using the number line to play a counting balloon pop game from Sheppard Software. This can be found at: http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/mathgames/menus/counting.htm Assessment- I will have the children work together to use a game and see which partner gets the highest score and level. This is a game that has that the children starting a four and working up to addition problems that would fall on the 1-10 number lines. http://www.coolmathgames.com/0-math-lines/ Closure: We will go over the basics of adding using the number line. I will explain to the children that understanding and using a number line will help them with addition and subtraction. Evaluation- We will have a review of addition problems 1-10. The children will be able to use a number line and counting bears to assist them in the addition.
