Notes on teaching via Skype ! ! ! ! ! ! ! Encourage students to update to the latest version of Skype Encourage students to upload a profile picture, in case they dont have a webcam. This gives a better sense of presence than just the audio. Encourage students never to call you this can open up more than one conversation, which becomes messy. Encourage students to mute their microphone when not speaking, otherwise you will easily get too much distracting noise. Note that some students must be reminded of this every now and again. If students use loudspeakers and not a headset, ask them to keep the sound low to avoid echos. Encourage students to ask questions via the chat function. In this way the teaching can run quite smoothly. Note that if students are on a mobile broadband connection, they may go offline now and then. In that case, they neednt and shouldnt call you back, and you dont have to add them to the conversation again. They should simply click on the ongoing conversation (which will be present on their screen) to join it once they are back online. In case you have to be on the go (using mobile broadband) while having to teach a class, try teaching via the chat function without audio or video. You can ask questions and give small assignments in this way. Works surprisingly well, even though you are offline some of the time. For oral exams, if the students are given time to prepare, and if they are not allowed to use the internet, you can keep an eye on them via Skype. Share your screen if you want to show something. Alternatively write/draw on a piece of paper and hold it up in front of the camera. Video conferencing requires you to have Skupe premium. This costs approx. !50 pr. year. The students dont need premium only one person in the conversation need this.
