Our Mission

FMSA Position on Letter of Concern to NUS Provost on Associate Professor Dr Syed Muhd Khairudin Aljunied Fellowship of Muslim Students Association (FMSA) is concerned that family, the core institution of society, is being challenged by the rise and tactics of individuals who support the Neo-Sodom-Gomorrah (NSG) community in Singapore and their efforts to mainstream and legalize LGBT values and lifestyle in Singapore. We stand together with the other individuals, religious and social organizations that have expressed similar concerns of having such values to be accepted as legal way of life here. Recently, Associate Professor Dr Syed Muhd Khairudin Aljunied from the Malay Studies Department of the National University of Singapore became the victim of a character assassination by members or sympathizers of the NSG community. They alleged that Dr Syed Khairudin was inciting hatred and acting out of character with his position as an academic when he openly stated his views about LGBT. Dr Syed Khairudin is an icon of the Malay/Muslim community in the field of academic achievement. He continues to play a contributing role to the Malay/Muslim community and the mainstream society. In this light, we stand firmly behind him as the NSG community and its sympathizers attempts to inaccurately compartmentalize him as unworthy, unreasonable and a man of hate. We are grateful that in this new century, there are still citizens in our country like Dr Syed Khairudin who are willing to stand up for the purity of the family institution. Like many modern societies, Singapore evolves socially as social conditions change over time. Norms and values, once firm and sacred, are sometimes challenged. Members of our society should carefully evaluate these changes and respond wisely. It is unfortunate that the global LGBT movement has infected Singapore to the extent that some citizens have become confused about what a family unit is. As Singaporeans, we recognize the individuals right to believe, live and practise as he so wishes, but a line should be drawn when an unfair attack is made on the character and career of personalities who are positive and honourable. By sending a letter to the NUS Provost as a pressure point strategy to get Dr Syed Khairudin to retract his statements about his beliefs on his own community is not an honourable act.

In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful

In as much as we tolerate the freedom of the NSG community to live unnaturally, the NSG community should tolerate our expression of disagreement with LGBT values. We should ask ourselves what academics should do if they do not speak their minds. Should academics keep quiet and watch helplessly as the family institution is being threatened? Is this what we Singaporeans want our academics to be quiet, passive observers of a rapidly changing world who are too afraid to voice their honest opinions? This expectation of the NSG community is unreasonable for in as much they are vocal, everyone has the right to verbalize their beliefs, thoughts and opinions. FMSA sees defending Associate Dr Syed Muhd Khairudin Aljunied on this issue as defending the family institution. As Muslims, we are taught that a woman is the natural partner for a man in the formation of the family. The idea that a family unit can be formed by 2 homosexual partners is abhorred not only by us but by the general population of the Malay/Muslim community. FMSA therefore reiterates our above position and invite individuals and groups to express themselves and denounce the tactics being used to bring down individuals or organizations who do not support the Neo-Sodom-Gomorrah community in Singapore
