Week 1: Focus on 1st American Hero George Washington

Lesson: Art portion of George Washington Unit continued. Objective: At the end of this lesson students will have created pieces of art about George Washington. The students will have finished art projects, one using paint and the other with crayons. Content Standards Speaking and Listening: SL5: Add drawings or other visual displays to descriptions as desired to provide additional detail. Writing Standard: WS1: Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to narrate a single event or several loosely linked events, tell about the events in the order in which they occurred, and provide a reaction to what happened. Technology Standards Addressed - you can find the technology standards on the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Website (http://www.iste.org) Technology standards: 1. Creativity and Innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. b. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression Materials: 1. Paint and Paint Brushes 2. Chart Paper 3. Handouts of George Washington 4. Scissors 5. Glue Sticks Instructional Directions: 1. Students will be divided in two different centers. 1st center is the Painting Center. Painting Center will have image of George Washington projected on Smart Board. Each center will be about 15-20 minutes depending on students output and behavior. 2nd center will be working on cutting out pictures from a handout and gluing it onto a colorful piece of construction paper. You will give each student their own handout.

Students will then take out their scissors and cut the image of George Washington from the handout. When finished they will take a piece of colored construction paper and glue the picture on to this paper. Students must put their name on the back of the construction paper once the image is glued on. Students will put their completed pictures in the done box when finished.

2. Students will have had previous exposure to working in centers and will know when the transition sound starts that it is time to switch centers. 3. Students will have rotated in both groups before todays lesson is complete. 4. Collect both sets of student work. This work will be displayed during a presentation near the end of the unit.
