Week 3: Focus on 3rd American Hero Martin Luther King Jr.

Lesson: Students will access video presentations about Martin Luther King Jr. and other American Heroes. Objective: At the end of this lesson students will understand Martin Luther King Jr. and other American Heroes through the use of sites like Brain Pop. Content Standards Speaking and Listening: SL1: Participate in collaborative conversations with diverse partners about kindergarten topics and texts with peers and adults in small and larger groups. SL3: Ask and answer questions in order to seek help, get information, or clarify something that is not understood. SL4: Describe familiar people, places, things, and events and, with prompting and support, provide additional detail. Technology Standards Addressed - you can find the technology standards on the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Website (http://www.iste.org) Technology standards: 1. Creativity and Innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology. a. Apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes 2. Communication and Collaboration Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others. b. Communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media and formats 6. Facilitate a whole group discussion about MLK. Use the white board to make a list of things they knew about our American Hero.

3. Explain to students about Civil Rights. The Civil Rights Movement encompasses social movements in the US. The goal was to end racial segregation and discrimination and enforce voting rights. The movement used civil resistance, nonviolent protest, and some civil disobedience. Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955-1956) Started with Rosa Parks. Most occurrences happened in the Southern States. Major achievements during this phase of the Civil Rights Movement were passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, that banned discrimination based on "race, color, religion, or national origin" in employment practices and public accommodations and the Voting Rights Acts of 1965 that restored and protected voting rights.
