1. Standards Addressed & Expectations of the Student: Students will engage in discussion, relate past experiences with discussion topic, pose questions to give a purpose for reading, and show comprehension through verbal and written activities. 3. Anticipatory Set ANTICIPATION GUIDE-worksheet Begin with writing speak on the board. Ask the definition. Then ask when they feel is appropriate time to speak up or not get involved. Next, give students ANTICIPATION GUIDE (see attached) to complete. Have students complete on own, then go over statements as a group, ask feedback, and discuss as appropriate. 4. Instructional Input (lecture, demonstration, explanation, instructions):

Teacher will lead class in discussion about right/wrong, fair/unfair, empathy toward others. The teacher will share a few stories that will break the ice and make students feel more comfortable to share their stories/experiences.

After completing discussion and anticipation guide, read the summary of story to students. Ask for possible suggestions that may what the story is about-reasons main character needs to speak. Begin reading and continue as time allows or assign reading as homework. Check for Understanding (Identify strategies to be used to determine if students have learned the objectives): Informal Method- check for comprehension and understanding through discussion. 5. 6. Closure: Students will complete a project after completing reading selection along with a test/quiz to assess their comprehension. 7. I independent Practice (This can be a question for individuals or small group, Class work or homework. The point is to extend the lesson and to ensure they have mastered the skill without teacher assistance.): silent reading, written work

I chose the Anticipation Guide to use in this lesson because the theme is important in this reading selection. The idea of speaking up for oneself is an important topic for adolescents, especially with the population I work with. The Anticipation Guide is a good method to include students in discussion and speak their interest in the reading. It will give background information to students and allow them to share their experiences. Interest in reading is heightened when the reader can personally relate to narrator/main character. This covered their ELPS (reading,
writing, listening and speaking)

Speak
Before we read and discuss, respond to each of the following statements by checking box with a D for Disagree or an A for Agree.

A D

Statement A person should always speak up for themselves, even if there are negative consequences, or they could be ridiculed. I have labeled students as outcasts or freaks based on what I have heard about them or what others think. I feel pressure to do things because of my peers.

A D

When we are finished reading, go back and answer questions a second time, noting if any answers have changed. How do these statements relate to the main character.
