Considerations

Moral
Means: Is this right?!

Do you have any examples?

Moral
Is this right: to dress children as adults?

Moral
Is this right: to make fun of religion/sexual orientation?
Is it offensive to a group of people?
Does it make fun of or ridicule a religion or culture?

Is it racist, homophobic, ageist or sexist?

Moral
Is this right: to use size 0 models?
Designers prefer them because the clothes drape better on them.
They are clothes horses for fashion designers thats a quote!

So what does that tell young people?

Moral
Many that are pro-fur back the argument Is this right: to condone cruelty to animals? that fur is a sustainable, eco-friendly
material; particularly in contrast to the petrochemical-based faux furs and fur alternatives currently available.
It is generally seen as morally and socially unacceptable to wear animal skins and furs

Ok so why do they still exist? mink, fox, snake, ostrich, seal.

And for all the protest over the above animals, are we not too bothered about leather from cows?

Moral
Is this right: to use sweatshops?
They are taking advantage! Conditions and pay are unfair..

Without the factories, these people would have no jobs at all.....

World Trade
Fair trade is a trading partnership, based on:
Dialogue talking to the

There are organisations trying to change this

producers transparency being clear when making a deal. respect making sure that they are treated on equal terms with the buyer Giving sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalised producers and workers

Environmental
Means: How can the environment be affected by this product?

Do you have any examples?

cotton = use of pesticides/fertilizers which pollute ground and waterways and use a lot of water to grow use of valuable nonrenewable resources like oil to produce polyester fibres

dyeing and finishing processes use vast amounts of water dyes and chemicals used to finish fabrics can pollute waterways if not filtered. heavy metals used in production of components release gas especially zips. Some materials use chemicals and vast amounts of water to be created as well.

disposal of discarded products and offcuts of fabric requires huge landfill sites and some fabrics take many years to decompose.

cleaning of textile products can waste energy and produce polluting effluent.

packaging and distribution of products; excessive and nonbiodegradable packaging, energy and materials used to produce packaging, use of fuel for transportation

Sustainability
Means: How can the production process be more environmentally and physically sustainable? As a designer, we need to think about: reusing/recycling in our designs Designing a product that will be loved (we all have clothes that we love to bits and keep trying to repair as they wear out!) Designing a product that can be used regularly i.e. its easy to mix and match and adapt

No pesticides/fertilizers = 100% organic cotton still uses lots of water to grow - Bamboo, sashawashi and hemp dont use a lot of water, grow fast and are bug resistant Dont use non-renewable resources like oil

Dont use dyes and chemicals or filter them. Or use vegetable/natural dyes. Dont bleach materials like linen or cotton Use processes that use less water digital printing uses ionised salts (but back to chemicals again!) Rethink use of components or use natural material or recycled plastics/metals

Disposal Recycle off cuts from factories Can you re-use it? Can it be used for another purpose when you have finished with it? Could it be repaired easily? Product could be designed to last Is it recyclable? the material or can the product be refashioned into something else? Is it biodegradable? cleaning of textile products Wash at lower temperatures Use of chemicals to clean=can use concentrated options to reduce packaging or Use an eco option (washer and tumble dryer balls Packaging: reduce or get rid of packaging or use biodegradable packaging. Make all of product locallyreduce transport. Is transporting by ship/lorry less damaging than plane? Transport - use of fuel could it be eco friendly?

Design product to be easy to clean (based on material, product design and the finish

Social
Means: How can society be affected or how can society affect the product?
SO, some of the moral issues are related to this, not offending people, sending the wrong/right messages etc. BUT it also needs to consider Does it fit with today's lifestyle? (i.e. did you need a space to specifically hold a mobile 15 yrs ago? Can it affect society or does society affect Running the design? top with
MP3 pocket

Can it affect society or does society affect the products?

Social

Interaction: If you were at a party, who would you approach first?

STATEMENT: individual choice- what does the wearer want to say about themselves today?

Social
FASHION TRENDS what is popular? Does it allow the consumer to be individual or restrict them? Or does it allow them to conform to a group? Can it do both??
CULTURE IN A WORK PLACE OR IN A COUNTRY. i.e. In the office, you are expected to look smart. Why?

WHAT REASONS ARE THERE FOR CHOOSING THE CLOTHES WE WEAR? Personal preference how much is our choice and how much is influenced? Human interaction Social acceptance, perceptions of the norm (fashion trends and what is accepted generally)

Empowerment give you or others confidence in you. Dress for authority, Look competent /strong, look professional.
Personalization to feel individual or make a statement or to choose to dress to follow a trend. Trust dress to look trustworthy or not to look trustworthy! Convenience/practicality easy to mix and match, is useful (pockets) comfortable and easy and quick to throw on dont have to think about accessorising with it! Also would you go running in an evening dress?? Safety- practical and emotional practical safety & does the outfit make the wearer feel safe? i.e. Makes them feel attractive but also covers flaws or accentuates their best features?
