Direct Instruction Lesson Plan Template Grade Level/Subject: 5th Central Focus: Reading/writing

Essential Standard/Common Core Objective: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.5.1 Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says Date submitted: 3/25/14 Date taught: 3/27 explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text. Daily Lesson Objective: Readers support the ideas they are trying to convey by pulling direct quotes from the reading, making inferences and drawing conclusions 21st Century Skills: 4th grade Communication Academic Language Demand (Language Function and Vocabulary): 4th grade Critical Thinking & Problem Solving Analyze, explain, argue Prior Knowledge: Foundational understanding of what an inference is

Activity 1. Focus and Review

Description of Activities and Setting Ask the class: do you know what the difference is between an observation and an inference? Use picture to determine which pieces are observations and which are inferences. As good readers, we need to be able develop inferences based on our own schema as well as observations and draw conclusions from the information given. I will model when to make inferences and how to draw conclusions by using a quick animation clip. As the video plays, I will stop during specific times and express what I am thinking. I will follow the same outline I plan to distribute to my students to use for their own reading. In small groups, my students will take their worksheets to an online book we will read together. As we read, I will stop at certain points and ask them to make their own inferences and draw some conclusions. Independently, students will then use the same worksheet for their historical fiction reading. I will ask them to come up with their own conclusions based on the facts they find.

6. Assessment Methods of all objectives/skills:

I will assess the students based on their results from the conclusion worksheet I distribute. I will consider it a success if they can find 2 facts with corresponding schemas and a reasonable conclusion that follows

7. Closure 8. Assessment Results of all objectives/skills:

I will remind students why it is important to understand implied language and how it can be beneficial to them as readers.

Targeted Students Modifications/Accommodations: For ELL students, in addition to the text, I will show graphics that convey the meaning of inference, observation and conclusion. Materials/Technology:
Powerpoint presentation

Student/Small Group Modifications/Accommodations: Students will be divided into book club groups
