Introduction The child I observed is 3 years old and was observed in a few different settings, but mostly in his home. He was also observed at the butterfly exhibit and in his preschool class (for a brief period of time). 1 Childs characteristics P. is a child that physically is smaller than most of the children his age. He is always on the go and wanting to move on to the next thing. He has very good balance and is very good at using his fine motor skills. Cognitively he seems to be a little bit ahead of the other children his ages. He learns things very quickly and because of his need to always do something new, he has learned about all kinds of things in a short amount of time. For instance, he is in the early stages of reading where he can sound out what letters are in a word and he can count to 100 by 1s 2s and 10s. He can also name all of the planets and knows a characteristic about each one. His language is getting much clearer, but for a while it was hard for other people to understand him. 2 Childs interests P. is interested in learning about everything and being active. He loves information and pictures and new things, which makes teaching him a lot of fun. At the butterfly exhibit he was amazed with the 3D movie about the life cycle of a butterfly and then when we saw the real ones he asked all sorts of questions about them. He also found a bench and asked to sit there. He sat there for a little under 10 minutes just studying the butterflies which was really interesting to see

because he usually doesnt sit still very long unless he is engaged. He loves sports and is wonderful at t-ball. He is interested in the other sports he has tried but really excels in that. 3 Childs need The area that P. needs some support in is social. He loves people and doesnt have problems playing with friends, but he does have issues when it comes to self-discipline and structure. This is especially hard for him in a classroom setting. He has trouble staying engaged and does not follow directions as well as he should. While I observed him he was running in the classroom, which is, as he knows, against the rules. I left the classroom pretty soon after because I thought that my presence might be making him act out more than usual. It turns out I was somewhat right and when I asked his teacher she said that was a little out of character for him. 4 - Childs interactions with peers, environment and adults P. does a great job interacting with other children. He absolutely loves being around people and socializing. He will walk up to his friends and tell them Hi, how are you? Thank you for coming over today. He seems to be just as social with adults if he feels comfortable around them and has met them before a few times. This is not something we discourage due to stranger danger. Now that his words are becoming more clear it is easy to understand what he is feeling and he is practicing talking about why. However, l he has definitely been expressing his desire to do only as he pleases lately and so some of his interactions with adults have been a little negative. He is learning that being respectful helps get you what you want and he has always done very well with manners. 5 Childs learning strengths and limitations His main learning strength is how quickly he picks up on things and how well he remembers them. I think it is a strength and weakness to always want to move on to the next thing. It is great

that this results in him learning about many different subjects but he has to learn to focus a little more. His main weakness is his lack of self-discipline, which leads to him missing some of the important parts of lessons.
