Afrika Lives! Exhibition Preparation

ARTISTIC PRODUCT GROUP BRAINSTORM


We are now about to bring our knowledge to life! You will be creating your own artistic product that
connects to your research. You will also be working in a group with classmates who have chosen
to do a similar art form. As a group you will think about how to bring your research and artistic
ideas together to use in our class exhibition. To begin this process, follow the steps below:

STEP 1: Assign the following roles in your group:


Facilitator (will make sure everyone is staying on task during group time) : ___________________

STEP 2: Individually, take a moment and write down the following about your
research:

Three key points/ideas you want to show in your artistic product

STEP 3: Each group member share out about their research. The Recorder should
take notes on each persons research topic on the Note Taking sheet.
STEP 4: Take 5 minutes to individually brainstorm ways you can communicate the
points/ideas from your research into your art from. Think about emotions, words,
color, movement, shape, etc. that will communicate your ideas

STEP 5: Share your personal brainstorm with the group and discuss how you can
unify your ideas. In other words, how can your different ideas connect to each
other? Recorder should write down ideas on the Note Taking sheet.

Some ideas for each art from:


Dance: Each group member choreographs a section that connects to his/her research topic. The group
then brings all the choreography together to create a longer dance.
Music: Each group member writes a verse that connects to his/her research and the group put it together
to create a song. The group can write a chorus that will unify the verses. OR each group member writes
his/her own song that has a common rhythm.
Storytelling/theater: Each group member writes a monologue, poem, or story. The group then discusses
how to connect each one into a script.
Visual Art (2D & 3D): Each group member creates a panel (large poster) that connects to his/her research
topic. All the panels have similar colors and possibly tell a story. The panels also connect to the script for
storytelling. AND/OR some group members create an object and all objects connect through spiritual or
political importance (e.g. all the objects could be associated with the oba (king) or a particular orisha).

STEP 6: Based on your brainstorm, what are some materials your group will need
for all of your artistic products? Recorder should make a list on the Note Taking
sheet.
