SpongeBob skit For this activity, we performed A Day in the Life of SpongeBob.

For this performance, we were not allowed to speak. Instead, we acted out ten different actions of SpongeBob using gestures, accompanied by a PowerPoint of pictures. We impersonated different characters such as SpongeBob, Sandy, Plankton, Patrick, Gary, and Squidward. The interactions among characters helped convey the actions we were doing. James, who was impersonating SpongeBob, also used whistling to explain what was happening. Our skit was successful. All of the class knew it was about SpongeBob, and they were able to identify the majority of the actions presented. We were instructed to do this activity to understand what it is like to understand a story without words. In an ELL classroom, some students will not understand any English, so the teacher might as well be mute. This assignment put us in the shoes of both the teacher and the ELL student. These skits taught us what it is like to be the student in a class that nothing is understood. We also learned different ways to convey a message without words. This activity is a form of total physical response, deeming the strategy successful and effective. Even though we were not using words, the pictures, acting, and whistling made it possible to understand the skit. As a potential ELL teacher, I am more aware of the obstacles and solutions.
