Artifact Reflection Artifact Title: Pre-Student Teaching Weekly Reflection Date: Spring 2014 Artifact Description: The artifact

I included is one of my weekly reflections from my time spent observing/teaching Spanish class at Platteville High School with Mr. Jeffry Henderson in the Spring of 2014. After every week in his class, I picked five things that stood out to me from my observation and teaching time. I then reflected on those events and what they meant to me and my career as a prospective educator. At the bottom of the page there are also some comments from my cooperating teacher about how I performed during the week as well. Alignment: Wisconsin Teacher Standard Alignment: This artifact and experience are most appropriately aligned with Standard 9: Reflection- The teacher is a reflective practitioner who continually evaluated the effects of his/her choices and actions on others (students, parents, and other professionals in the learning community) and who actively seeks out opportunities to grow professionally. This artifact best aligns with standard 9 because it shows how I reflect on my teaching and observation experiences. At the end of the week I was able to discuss the events of the week with my cooperating teacher. We discussed the choices he and I made while we were teaching. We talked about things we could have done differently, along with some of the things we were pleased with. This is a valuable practice that I need to continue during my entire professional career. I am more competent in this standard because these reflection conferences helped me develop my metacognitive intelligence. I was able to take a step back and evaluate myself as an educator and a student. UW-Platteville Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Alignment: This experience best aligns with KSD4.a: Reflecting on Teaching- The candidate makes an accurate and thoughtful reflection of his/her teaching effectiveness, is aware of specific elements of his/her teaching that contributed to successful instruction, and can offer alternative teacher action to predict the future successes of alternate approaches. This pre-student teaching experience best aligns with this KSD because it allowed me to evaluate my effectiveness as a teacher. I did not have a lot of teaching experience before this so it was important to get feedback and reflect on the different events that I was exposed to. My

cooperating teacher was very helpful and offered alternate methods for me to consider when I had trouble with certain things while I was teaching. I was also able to talk with him about the things he was doing in his teaching. If I was uncertain about an approach he took, I could ask him, and he explained his rationale. I am more competent after this experience because now I will be able to reflect on my own teaching for the rest of my career without the help of a cooperating teacher. It always helps to have another person to give suggestions on how I can approve, but I will not always have that in my future classroom. Secondary KSDs: KSD2.c: Managing Classroom Procedures KSD2.d: Managing Student Behavior KSD4.e: Growing and Developing Professionally Reflection: What I learned about teaching/learning from this experience: I learned a lot about both teaching and learning from this experience. I learned that I can learn a lot by reflecting on my teaching after every lesson or after the week. When I do this, it helps me better prepare for future lessons and how I can do things better the second time around. I also learned that it is not only important for beginning teachers to reflect, but that veteran teachers can learn a lot about themselves by doing this as well. When I worked with my cooperating teacher during our reflection times, I found that he remembered things he could have done differently, and he has been teaching for over thirty years. What I learned about myself as a prospective educator as a result of this experience: I learned that it is important for me to reflect on my own experiences and write things down immediately after a lesson. Things move quickly while I teach, and it is easy for me to forget things I do while teaching. If I write things down in a journal, I can go back after my lessons and make notes about the important parts of my lesson.
