The Ancient Olympics Essential Question: How do the Olympic Games symbolize competitions between countries ideologies more

than just an athletic competition? Learning Goals: (teacher speak) Students will be able to analyze ancient artifacts to determine what kinds of events took place at the Ancient Olympic Games and why they took place at all. Learning Targets: (students speak) I can analyze ancient artifacts to determine what kinds of athletic events took place in the Ancient Olympics. I know why the Ancient Greeks first began holding the Ancient Olympics. I can compare and contrast the significance of the Ancient Olympics compared to our modern Olympic games. CCSS: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.11-12.2 Determine the central ideas or information of a primary or secondary source; provide an accurate summary that makes clear the relationships among the key details and ideas UCLA Historical Thinking: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.11-12.7 Integrate and evaluate multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats and media (e.g., visually, quantitatively, as well as in words) in order to address a question or solve a problem. CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RH.11-12.9 Integrate information from diverse sources, both primary and secondary, into a coherent understanding of an idea or event, noting discrepancies among sources. Agenda: 1. Lecture: (10-15 minutes) power point lecture giving the students some background information on the Ancient Olympics 2. Artifact Analysis: (15-20 minutes) I will show pictures of Artifacts that historians have studied to learn about the Ancient Olympics. -Students will work in groups of three to determine what the Artifact can tell them about the Ancient Olympics, each student will take notes on what they determine. 3. Analyze and Share as a class: (10-15 minutes) Come back together as a class and share what students thought the artifacts told us about the Ancient Olympics 4. The Real Facts:(15 minutes) I will share what the artifacts actually show, what competitions were held, what the reward was, why the games were held etc. 5. Closure: (5minutes) Whole class discussion. How has the purpose of the Olympic Games shifted in the past 5000 years? What is the purpose of The Games today? Assessment: Students will turn in artifact notes for participation points and so I can see they were on track with studying the artifacts. I will ask clarification and assessment questions along the way to ensure we are all on track Use of Literacy: Interpreting the artifacts. Materials/Technology: Smart boards, for students to view PowerPoint, watch videos, and zoom in or out to view artifacts.
