ADULT CATHOLIC TYPES, AGES 18-23


Among the 41 cases of sampled youth who began our study as Catholic or belonging to obviously Catholic families, we found by our third interviews five years later only 12 who could be considered engaged and none we could categorize as devout.

Apostates: Have abandoned their Catholic identity without adopting different religious commitments. Are critical of the Catholic Church.

Switchers: Have given up their Catholic identity and replaced it with a new religious identity.

Estranged: Hold onto a Catholic identity but are critical of Catholicism and make efforts to distance themselves from the Church.

Nominal: Maintain a Catholic social identity but are not practicing. Make no attempt to distance themselves from Catholicism.

Engaged: Embrace a Catholic identity, actively practice Catholicism in their daily personal lives, and find faith to be important and meaningful, even if they do not believe all that the Church teaches.

Devout: Practice faith consistently, are able to articulate Church doctrine, believe most of the Churchs teachings, and expect to continue to live as Catholics in the future.
