Plants for Food and Fibre Webquest

A webquest is an online activity where students use resources presented to them in order to answer a series of questions. The objective of this webquest is for you to understand how humans artificially select or selectively breed plants in order to get desired traits For each of the following links please visit them, read or follow directions, and complete all questions. Remember, the questions AFTER the link refer to the webpage you are viewing.

Selective Breeding http://bioweb.uwlax.edu/bio203/s2012/montesin_elis/adaptation.htm 1. What is selective breeding? https://sites.google.com/site/selectivebreedingofplants/ 2. Give 3 examples of selective breeding. Including descriptions of how the plant was before and after the process happened (may use first link) 3. How many different types of plants were developed from Wild Mustard through selective breeding? What trait was selected for each? 4. What are 3 problems that arise from selective breeding? 5. Looking at the pictures at the bottom labeled Wild vs Domestic, what difference do you notice most between the natural plant (Wild) and the plant selectively bred by humans (Domestic)? http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/science/add_gateway_pre_2011/li ving/genesrev2.shtml 6. What are the four steps in selective breeding?

7. What is a disadvantage or problem with selective breeding shown on this site? http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/harvest/engineer/ Please read the introduction page and then click on selective breeding on the right hand side. Complete the activity and answer the questions. 8. How many tries did it take for you to select the cobs that resulted in the largest crop possible? 9. How long would this process take in real life? 10.What happens when you select the smallest ears of corn for the activity? 11.Take time to explore this activity if you like* Genetic Engineering http://tiki.oneworld.net/genetics/GE6.html 12.In your own words, what is genetic engineering? 13.Why do humans use genetic engineering? http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/science/add_gateway_pre_2011/li ving/genesrev3.shtml 14.What are two examples of genetically engineered plants? What characteristic were they genetically engineered for? 15.Watch the how genetically engineering is done animation. Conclusion 16.With your knowledge of how selective breeding and genetic engineering works, what would you expect to see crops look like in 100 years? 17.What are some questions that you still have about selective breeding or genetic engineering?* 18.On a scale from 1 to 5, (1 being hated it, 5 being loved it) what did you think about this webquest?
