4 1. This video gave many interesting ideas for how to teach a foreign language by using as many real life scenarios as possible. Many of the ideas have to do with giving the students opportunities to learn a foreign language by acting out things that may actually occur. I would implement many of these ideas into my own classroom, as long as the class 2 has an intermediate to advanced level of English ability. 2. Not available 3. This video was pretty basic and full of information that I have already learned. Its important to facilitate a desire in life long learners in your students by tapping into things that are important and central to them.

1. The idea in this video would be a good one. It gets students working together and thinking creatively. It also has the http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QirhN teacher with them through every step of the process. Its eIwQ0w&feature=related important as a teacher to make notes of the areas where Communicative Language Teaching the students are struggling or making mistakes and discuss http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2 them after the lesson instead of interrupting the students 0zBOWrP2yc&feature=relmfu while they are attempting to be creative and thoughtful. Task-Based Language Teaching 2. Nothing very profound or new in this video. It simply just http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJYbk reiterated the other videos we have watched about the DK3T-k&feature=relmfu need to put students in real life situations and get them talking as much as possible. 3. Same reflection as above. Should build language development around the task. Use to assess, set priorities for teaching, and to build language awareness around students on task 1. This video had many good strategies for teaching English to different ability and age levels. In my experience scaffolded conversations are effective and far less threatening for students who are not totally comfortable with the language. It encourages them to use the language but gives them the initial support they may need. Sing-a-longs with hand motions are also great to young children, especially if the meaning of the words are taught before hand. The mixing up of the sentences is a good sentence structure exercise but would be more effective as an individual or small group exercise.

Task-Based Learning

Week 3 2/3 ESL Struggles & Strategies http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWU238PymM Student centered ESL video project http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frMGCQ acDD0

2. This video offered a good concept for high level learners. I think this project would be far too intimidating and unreachable for students who did not have a decent grasp of English. However, allowing the students to pick their own real life situation is an excellent way to get them invested in the assignment. Also, the reflection afterwards is crucial to learning anything.
Week 4 2/10 Jack C. Richards on Competency Based Instruction http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRmYlNp YGkw Teaching English to Children http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KF7wpZs lNRE

1. This video was pretty straightforward with no new information in it. It simply brings up the point that as an English teacher needs to be concerned what the final competencies that were trying to teach the students, either listening, speaking, reading, or writing. 2. This video showed a good way to teach vocabulary to young learners. It was done in a way that doesnt required a lot of speaking but uses a variety of modalities and teaching strategies to imprint the words in the students minds. 1. Not found 2. This video demonstrated great techniques to use with students who are in their silent period or who are very young. It gets them familiar with the language and takes away some of the anxiety of having to speak when students arent ready. I would worry that its just having the students memorize words without actually knowing what they mean. 3. Its an interesting approach and I appreciate how the focus is on the student. However, I do not know how the teacher would teach new material. It seems it would only be effective to review what is already known and you have to have some strong speakers in the class to correct those who were wrong. 4. I like how the students learn to correct themselves, but I dont know how realistic this approach is to everyday living, but is good for drill and kill. 5. I like how the students learn from each other in this video, however, it seems to waste a lot of time getting the students to right pronunciation. 1. This is a good way of teaching vocabulary and getting students involved in the learning. Reviewing what is learned in class, is a critical way of assessing student knowledge and engagement. 2. This video does a great job of engaging the students in authentic but content rich material. They work in groups and then report to the class. The teacher uses a variety of techniques to get the students working and talking and engaging with one another and goes in

Week 7 3/3 Teacher Training Video

http://www.carla.umn.edu/strategies/vid eo/strategies.html Language & Culture http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A iJ8-2hAqm4&feature=related English as an International Language http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qa b5v7YefHU&feature=relmfu New Englishes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v31Afu DphUw&feature=relmfu

1. There are many good strategies on this site. I will go back to this site to get some ideas about different ways to teach my ELLs. You can use many of these strategies and build on them and tailor them to the level of your students. 2. This video didnt really offer any new information. If youve spent any time abroad you know its imperative to learn the language if you truly want to learn the culture and make connections with people from that culture. 3. I had never thought about English losing its culture because of the prevalence and necessity of it. Most people today dont learn English because they want to fully understand American or British or Australian culture. They learn English because they want to do business on the international level or because they need it to survive. Its important when teaching to understand what the reasoning behind learning English is and what the end goal is. 4. We need to be aware of the New Englishes that have emerged over the years. We cannot discriminate against these new Englishes, but see them as an extension of whatever culture they come from. Students need to be exposed to these different kinds of Englishes so they can understand and respond to them. 1. There are many good strategies in this video for teaching beginner learners. She is implementing techniques that appeal to a variety of their senses. She is also not forcing the students to talk in complete sentences but allowing them to respond however they feel comfortable. She also uses many visuals that display the information to students. 2. The structure of this class Is a little disorganized and would only work in a very small class. The teacher does a decent job of modeling what he expects. I think he should give the students a little more time to prepare their answers and go over some other vocabulary they may need to describe their favorite kinds of food other than delicious and disgusting. 3. This is a good example of the type of work students should be producing at the advanced level but they should have the English ability to not read directly from the script. Students having to implement idioms into their project is a great tool to get them familiar with the nuances of English.

Jack C. Richards on Teaching Principles http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UR pjAcs9fy0 Diane Larsen-Freeman on Techniques & Principles in Language Teaching (3rd ed.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNSmrbk YKx8

1. I think Richards makes a good point in this video about identifying your own principles. We need to know why we are teaching a certain way in order to do it effectively. We cant just teach from the curriculum without understanding the reasoning behind it. As a teacher, I need to know and identify my principles, and realize they might change with each class or student but I need to work to use those principles to educate students in a way that I deem valuable. 2. This video was very boring. She basically talked about the evolution of language learners and how learners are whole beings and need to be taught in that way. 1. This video was interesting. It focused on suggestopedia, which is built on a positive environment and largely focuses on context for learning. Learning without context is meaningless and only through learning the background and meaning of events or facts can students truly learn. The class set up is vitally important to encourage creativity and safety. I didnt see how the lesson they showed was contributing to deep learning, or how it related to ELLs, but the concepts that mistakes can be seen as positive and students need to make connections to their prior knowledge are beneficial in all aspects of teaching. 2. This video built on the first one about suggestopedia. He talked about telling jokes in the ELD classroom and working on pronunciation. I liked his suggestion of using ridiculous scenarios, such as the mommy mosquito and the baby mosquito, to get the students to participate in the pronunciation activities so they do not feel uncomfortable about making mistakes. However, I am not sure I understood the joke aspect because humor is very cultural and theres a high likelihood that ELs will not understand many jokes from an American perspective. 3. Im not sure I understood this video completely. It appears the students have a conversation in their native language and the teacher translates for them. While I think its great that all the students are involved in the conversation, I think it is asking entirely too much of the teacher to be translating every sentence the students speak.

Observing Standards-in-Action: ESL Classroom Lesson http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQusQW PjdMo Lesson Planning

1. This video was pretty straight-forward. He simply talked 2 about the need to have thought about what youre going to teach, the objectives youre going to reach, and how youre going to get there. Lessons should be

reflected on to determine what was effective and engaging and then adjusted the next time it is used. 2. This video was a good reminder to remind students and yourself of the most important aspects of the lesson. What part of the lesson do you want them to remember and go back and apply to future lessons? 3. This is a great way to learn a new language. Its engaging many of the senses and getting the students to demonstrate their knowledge by their physical responses. 1. This video demonstrates a great concept for adult ELL programs or student ELL programs that have the resources to take their students on outings where they can actually use the language they have been learning in class. 2. This video was more of the same from the video before. This video takes it a step further by having the students reflect on their experience and talk about the two experiences of the farm and the grocery store. 3. I really liked his idea of picture stories and having the students retell the stories and create elements of the story themselves that may or may not have occurred. It demonstrates the students know the story and can put it in their own words.
