## Comments for RL11301_2013F INTERMEDIATE ITALIAN I - Giuliana La Rosa

What are the strengths of this course?
Comment It helped very much in the development of familiarity with Italian culture as well as some grammatical nuances. This course is a great introduction to Italian and has allowed me to develop my skills. The class size was small and discussion was encouraged. Standardized schedule - each unit had a routine of compositions, presentations, quizzes, exercises, and tests that allowed you to always know what was happening. The instructor was incredibly helpful, knowledgeable, and kind. Instructor does a good job of creating enthusiasm for the language and culture. I found there was a good balance between projects, compositions, grammar assignments from the textbook, and tests and quizzes. We learned about both Italian language and Italian grammar.

## How could the instructor improve the course?

Comment There could be a stronger focus on the perfection of grammatical correctness in class, possibly through additional exercises, as there are many exceptions with certain rules which are difficult to remember when presented with so many. Perhaps stay on track with the other sections and syllabus. For most of us, this is only our second year of learning Italian, so I would focus more on grammar and vocabulary instead of Italian culture. It was an interesting course, but I felt like my writing/speaking abilities haven't improved very much. I think she did really well improving the course from what it could have been already, the textbook is horrible and she did a good job helping to clarify things. Better organization and preparation. Explain some of the difficult grammar rules and exceptions to verb conjugations a little more thoroughly. For even more diversity, perhaps a trip or two to a local Italian restaurant could be considered. This would provide students with the opportunity to enjoy Italian food and have fun while at the same time practice their speech and demonstrate their knowledge of the culture. We could go over grammar more.

Would you recommend this course to other students, majors, etc.? Why or why not?
Comment Yes, it is a logical step in the Italian sequence for one wishing to speak the language at a high level. Yes, great course to fulfill requirement. Yes. The subject material was engaging. I would highly recommend this course to students interested in Italian regardless of major. The class does a good job of teaching about the language as well as the culture of Italy in an interesting way. In addition, it involves only a reasonable amount of work and is very well structured. I would recommend it because it is a fun way to learn Italian.
