Teacher: K.Simonic Course: Grade 6 Physical Education and Health Unit Title: Service Learning Project Lesson Plan Title: Cancer Colors Objectives: (SOLs and Local objectives) 6.3 Discuss the causes, treatment, and prevention of communicable and non-communicable diseases. (SOL 6.1.e, 6.2.c) 6.3.1 Explain how the natural body defenses work to fight disease. Enduring Understandings Essential Questions The study of Cancer to inform my student of all What are the different types of cancer and how the different types of cancer. do they affect me? How will students demonstrate their understanding? They will research their assigned cancer, participate in memory game, and participate in demonstration. Assessments-Formative and Summative Formative- research their assigned career Summative- demonstrate knowledge of cancers by actively participation in the memory game

Scope and Sequence of Learning Activities (Include Warm-Up, Strategies, Assessments, Closure/Reflection) I. Housekeeping: A. Greet the Students. B. Take Attendance. II. Procedures A. Students will sit in assigned groups B. Knowledge check 1. Students will respond to a couple of questions about what they know about cancer. 2. They will be given the definition of cancer and how it is not a communicable disease. B. Introduction 1. Students will be given some facts about how we are increasing survivor rates 2. Students will watch a video from the American Cancer Society. C. Memory Game 1. In their assigned groups the students will play the memory game as a review D. Lifestyle Behaviors 1. Students will discuss the lifestyle behaviors that help reduce the risk of developing a noncommunicable disease E. Cancer does not discriminate 1. Students will watch a video on how cancer does not discriminate F. Conclude Class 1. Students will answer the two exit ticket questions. 2. Teacher will answer any questions that the students have.
