Theory Variations on Patriotism
The Students are required to bring in, or perform, a piece of music
that emulates Patriotism.
-Students will listen to Charles Ive's Variations on America,
teacher will facilitate a discussion: What is Patriotism? Was Ives a
Patriot? Can we tell from his Piece? What may be a patriotic
inspiration for his variations? Why would he do variations on a
national anthem?
-Students are divided into groups of 5
Each group will perform, and participate in a
discussion regarding the 5 inuences, the
socio-political effects of their events, other
perspectives on the event if possible, WHAT
DID PATRIOTISM LOOK LIKE
SURROUNDING THIS EVENT?
Teacher will facilitate a reection on the events as well as performances.
Students have access to all types of
instruments including digital
insruments.

By the end of the Unit (Composition Project)
Students in the Advanced Theory Course
will be able to internalize and manipulate

course of the lesson by

Each group must compose 5 variations on a Patriotic Tune of their
choice. Students are encouraged to use one of the songs they
have brought in. Each variation must reect an Historic
Event in American History. Students must provide program
notes for their performance explaining the inspiration behind each
variation as well as the theme.
