POVERTY IN THE USA

Lesson: How Poverty affects a persons life Teacher: Michael Ratay I. Standards: NASPE STANDARDS Standard 1: Core Concepts-Apply health promotion and disease prevention concepts and principles to personal, family, and community health issues. Standard 6: Decision Making- Use decision-making skills to enhance health. Standard 7: Social Skills -Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication and other social skills which enhance health. GLCES: 1.7 Assess personal barriers to healthy eating and physical activity, and develop practical solutions to remove these barriers. 2.6 Describe financial, political, social, and legal influences regarding alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. 3.1 Explain the effects of violence on individuals, families, communities, and our nation. 4.1 Identify the characteristics of positive relationships, and analyze their impact on personal, family, and community health. I. Behavioral Objectives a. Objectives: i. The students will be able to identify the challenges of living below the poverty line by entering it into their journal and discussing it with their partners. ii. The students will demonstrate how poverty can affect a person well being by writing them down on their notecards. a. Assessment: During this lesson I will assess the students by their journal entry answering what they know about poverty. The students will also turn in an index card at the end of class with one thing they fully understand about poverty and on the other side one aspect they do not yet fully understand about poverty. II. Anticipatory Set: After the students come in and journal about what they know or think they know about poverty. Show the first 3 minutes of the poverty in the USA tour video. This video will provide basic information about how families below the poverty line live day to day. III. Objectives Purpose: The purpose of this lesson is to have the students understand the challenges of poverty and how living below the poverty line can affect a persons life.

Input: Task Analysis: a. The students will enter class by quietly walking to their seats and getting their journals out. b. Once the students all have taken out their journals or a piece of paper if they have forgotten their journals I will write the journal prompt on the board. Discuss what you know about poverty and who does it affect? c. After the students have completed their journal entry, we will watch the first three minutes of the Poverty in the USA Tour video. http://www.povertyusa.org/the-state-of-poverty/poverty-usa-tour/ d. After the video I will have the students quickly write in their journal about something new they learned in the movie. e. The students will then pair up with a student next to them to share what they have written in their journals about poverty. After they are done sharing about what they know or have learned about poverty each pair will think of one or two questions or misconceptions they have about poverty. f. Once each pair has come up with their questions I will randomly select a group by using Popsicle sticks. Before answering the students questions I will allow other groups to answer or comment on the questions. g. Once all questions and the conversation between the students have ended transition into short lecture on how poverty can affect a persons life. h. In this lecture I will cover the challenges of poverty and how living below the poverty line can affect a persons life. Short videos of how poverty can affect a life. i. The challenges in this lecture will cover social, safety, nutrition, and person health and wellness. j. Hand out index cards. On one side have the students write down the how poverty can affect a persons life. And on the other side write a question they have or an area they are confused about. k. As the students finish their note cards they will hand them in as they leave class.

Analyze: Compare a person below poverty line to someone above the poverty line. iv. Evaluation: Judge how living under the Poverty line can affect a persons life. b. Learning Styles/Accommodations: i. I will be using many different learning styles to accommodate to the students different learning styles. There will be use of video, journals, and discussion. c. Method and Materials: i. This lesson will consist of Video, discussion, and journaling

Students will think of questions or misconceptions they have about poverty with their partners. b. Answer groups questions. c. What are the challenges of living below the poverty line? d. Index Card at the end of class. Guided Practice: a. Have students watch video and journal about what they have learned about poverty. b. Walking around class making sure students are on task. Independent Practice: a. Students will journal independently b. Students will fill out their index cards independently Closure: i. Clear up any misconceptions about poverty and whom it can affect. ii. Students will full out and turn in index cards.
