Genre?

As emphasized in davitt's article, "Writing genre", devitt's main focus was on the genre theory in which it explains how and why texts are important. She says, "Genre is a response to recurring rhetorical situation". In other words genre functions like a code of behavior due to a repeated situation, thus assumption plays a role in how one responds to the situation. While Genre is introduced, be a part of a discourse community by author swales who spends a deal of time in examining discourse communities. Therefore, genre as part of discourse community, maintains characteristics that are related to the discourse. The success of identifying the genre will also lead to the identification of the discourse community, and its goal as well. Genre is a style that is presumably to identified easily to non-members of the discourse community. To successfully analyze physical therapy, patient intake form must be analyzed as well to illuminate why this genre was introduced to the discourse community and what it aims to accomplish. By collecting a variety of samples, I will hope to gain better perspective on the moves common within the genre, as well as the variance that the genre exhibits. The more samples of the genre you collect, the more you will be able to notice patterns within the genre. "Who has the power?" Genre is made for the sole reason of communicative furtherance of the discourse's aim, which, in this situation is the patient intake form. By knowing that, The group that holds the genre's power will ultimately determine what the genre's goal will be. The power is held primarily in the hand of a specific group of people who also can be recognized as threshold members, even non-members of different profession. In this case, it is a group is made of head

physicians, lawyers and insurance agent. They determine what is needed to be on the form to fully aid the front office while effective enough to allow physicians to diagnose correctly. The patient may also be an individual that holds the power, in a case in which the form is not fully examining the patient symptoms. Just like in exhibit B where in this case it is the insurance section where it was lacking, thus making threshold members add or emit certain sections, hence introducing a cycle of revision between patients and threshold members that will aim to perfect the document. Form Due to intertextality, when a genre is successful at aiding the discourse community, the structure of the form tends to be transferred from one therapy institution to the next thus making it a rhetorical situation. In two of the three samples of the genre, they tend to use the same form of structure and text while the third is distinctively different, making an assumption that the two that are common are significantly more legitimate and professional. Exhibit A is the said to be a clinic while exhibit C presumably a hospital, since there style is common that leads me to believe that transferring form of writing is occurring from public institutions to individual institutions. In exhibit B, the form looks to be spacious so that may allow the patient to make a detailed description his/her own symptom. The ethos appeal tends to be weaker than the A and C exhibit, by viewing what the form looks like. Exhibit B inscribes the name of the office left handed side of the paper while making the title bolded rather than a heading, making an assumption to the patient that this clinic is not as professional as other clinics. The form lacks medical history section as well as the human diagram, which always the physician to act accordingly to the diagnosis faster and more efficient. Genres supposedly have the discourse's lexis in it but in this discourse, there is little to none, thus I conclude that the

discourse community has found that by using lexis, it prohibits clear understanding between the patient and the physician thus slowing the productivity of the workplace. Participation Participation is the main goal in any discourse community, thus the discourse community tends to put a lot of effort into putting the form in a place where everyone is able to access/view it, which would be the internet. During this modern day, it is hard to find an individual with no internet access due to the number of places that enables internet access free. Another genre tend to either aid or hurdle the genre of patient intact form is the website, people view the ethics, reviews and professional achievement on the website to help them locate the best physician in the area. In this field of therapy, most of the clients tend to be the elderly so the lexis of the internet and the ability to use the computer prohibits them from knowing about document or even the clinic. This leads physicians to use another genre, advertising effects the amount of people they reach thus increasing the demand of the clinic. The genre is only as good as the other genres allows it to be, one can conclude here that one genre can affect other genres in the discourse , thus acting like a chain reaction. Notes:Payment/Setting/topic/participants/features Part one: Participation: Who is invited to speak or interact with the text? Who is able to access (have access toget the document), read, and understand the text? Who is NOT able to access the document? Why might have access but not understand it? What can you tell about power dynamics from this text? What do the answers to these questions tell you about the discourse community?
