Mathematics Lesson Plan

TEACHER Cheryl Lee Subject(s): Mathematics Time Frame: 1 hour Content Grade(s): 2 Strand(s) Number Sense and Numeration

Name of the Rich Performance Task: Simple Counting

Big Idea: There are many different counting strategies we can learn from others CURRICULUM EXPECTATIONS Overall Expectation read, represent, compare, and order whole numbers to 100, and use concrete materials to represent fractions and money amounts to 100; Specific Expectations Students will: read and print in words whole numbers to twenty in meaningful contexts compose and decompose two-digit numbers in meaningful ways
Accommodations

Some students may need the following in the main activity: Increase time or quiet space
Materials required:

Giant Cup cut-out with marshmallow cut-outs Paper for each student with number written Handout A (1 per student), pencil Assess if students are properly counting in the warm-up activity Collect handout and identify areas of improvement on checklist (can they add/subtract single digits, are they arranging the marshmallows/objects in ways that are mathematically logical)

Assessment Tool(s):

Procedure of Task: GETTING STARTED 10 minutes Energizer activity: (snowball fight). Write a number from 1-20 on a piece of paper and distribute to each student. Have students stand 50/50 on either side of the room and throw the snowball. Everyone picks up a snowball and does however many bum wiggles is indicated by the number shown. 1 practice round, repeat x2 (using simple formulas like +5 or -8) WORKING ON IT part 2 during 30 minutes Activity: Prepare a giant paper cup of cocoa, 20+ marshmallow circles (arrange as 4x5) for whole class to see Bottom: My favourite drink is ____ I started with ____ number of ____ How can I count how many there are - Have students share counting strategies (get many students) Should we have more/less marshmallows in our cup of cocoa? - Place more or less pieces and ask how many is now left Distribute handout and have students work independently. REFLECTING AND CONNECTING part 3 after 10 minutes Form a sharing circle using a talking piece. Ask the following questions: What was one thing youve learned in these activities?
