General $he liquid penetrant examination method is an effecti(e means for detecting discontinuities which are open to the surface of nonporous metals and other materials. $ypical discontinuities detectable by this method are crac,s, seams, laps, cold shuts, laminations, and porosity. In principle, a liquid penetrant is applied to the surface to be examined and allowed to enter discontinuities. All excess penetrant is then remo(ed, the part is dried, and a de(eloper is applied. $he de(eloper functions both as a blotter to absorb penetrant that has been trapped in discontinuities, and as a contrasting bac,ground to enhance the (isibility of penetrant indications. $he dyes in penetrants are either color contrast -(isible under white light. or fluorescent -(isible under ultra(iolet light..
