CHILD OBSERVATIONS

By: Sheri Johnson Ann is the child I have chosen to observe. Her date of birth is 10/11/2010; she is a three year old girl that has been in my care since she was six weeks old. Ann has a five year old sister and a three month old little brother- both of whom are also enrolled in my center. Her parents are married and both work full-time. Ann is very cheerful most of the time; she tends to be a leader in our group.

1.) January 16, 2014

10:10 A.M

Cognition and General Knowledge

Ann sits down at the puzzle table. She pulls out a puzzle and dumps all the pieces on the table. One piece falls on the floor, she says oops, I got it, then picks up the piece that fell and put it back on the table. Ann tries to put a piece in the puzzle frame. She spins the piece around and tries to fit it in the puzzle again. Ann then takes all the puzzle pieces on turns them right side up. She says mmmh and puts her finger on her chin and starts putting the pieces together to finish the puzzle. When Ann is finished with the puzzle she says Look Sheri, I did it, I did it! 2.) Ann goes over to the kitchen play set in the dramatic play area. She takes out some play bacon and put it on the burner. Ann asks who wants some bacon? K says me do. Ann gets out a plate, puts bacon on the plate and gives it to K as she says its all done. When K takes the plate with the bacon on it, Ann says good job to the playmate. 3.) Ann begins to play with the farm animals. She asks M do you want the cow or horse? M says cow. Ann gives M the cow and she begins to play with the horse, making nhhh sound with the horse. Ann starts to spin around in circles as she flies the cow in the air saying wee. M begins to copy what Ann is doing. 4.) February 7, 2014 3:40 P.M Cognition and General Knowledge

Ann enters the block area and says I build a big tower Sheri I tell her okay. K followers her into the block area. Ann says NO! and pushes K away. I ask Ann how can we tell K nicely that you want to build a tower by yourself? Ann bends down as she holds both of Ks upper arms gently and says me build a tower by myself okay. K wines for a moment then walks away from the block area. I tell Ann that was a very nice way to tell K you wanted to do it alone. Ann built a very tall tower, and then said look Sheri, look. I did myself! I tell her great job!

5.) February 14, 2014

7:45 A.M

Cognition and General Knowledge

Ann sits down at the preschool table for some play dough play. I put out the tub of play dough and the tub with all the play dough tools. Ann asks you help me open my container please? I help her open her container. Ann says I making cookies, you play with me? I take some play dough out and start to shape it. Ann takes a rolling pin and flattens her dough. Ann uses a star cutter shape and presses it into the play dough. Ann says Look at my cookie, this one for you. I tell Ann thank you. 6.) February 21, 2014 3:15P.M Health and Physical Development

After everyone washes their hands, I gather the children to the snack table for snack time. Ann sits down at the table. Ann asks what are we having? I tell her we are having cereal bars and milk. Ann says yummy in my tummy. Ann breaks off her cereal bar in smaller pieces as she puts it in her mouth. 7.) February 28, 2014 7:45 A.M Social and Emotional Development

Ann Arrives to daycare. She says hi Sheri, IM HERE!! I missed you so much. A nn gives me a big hug. Ann asks can I push the snowman? I tell her when she gets her boot s and her coat off and put away she can press the button on the dancing snowman. Ann says okay Sheri. She sits down and kicks off her boots. Ann takes off her coat and throws it on the ground. Ann asks me do it now? I ask Ann Is that where your coat and boots go? Ann puts her hand on her hip and says well no, then she picks up her coat and hangs it on her hook. Ann then picks up her boots and put them on the shoe shelf. I tell her she did a great job, now you can push the button. Ann pushed the button on the dancing snowman and starts to dance around while it plays through the song. 8.) March 6, 2014 10:45 A.M Language Development and Communication

I tell the children its time to go outside, Ann jumps up and down and says yeaaaaah while she claps her hands. I tell the children lets all line up. Ann asks me be leader today? I say yes Ann you may be the leader today. Ann says come on guys, go behind me I the leader as we go up the stairs to the coat area Ann pulls her coat arm so that it falls off the hanger and begins to try to put her coat on without any help.

Language Development and Communication

Ann sits down next to a nine month old playmate. Ann asks the child you want me to read you a story? Yeah, yeah, I get the book Ann goes over to the book shelf and picks out a book. pumpkin farm, this one Ann sits down next to the nine month old and start s to read the book. 10.) March 20, 2014 12:15 P.M Health and Physical Development

I tell Ann to go wash her hands because we will be having lunch soon. Ann says okay. She goes into the bathroom and turns on the water. Ann is humming while she gets her hands wet. Then she puts her hand under the automatic soap dispenser to get soap on her hands. As Ann is scrubbing her hands she counts 1,2,3,4,7,8,9,10,12,13,14,15,17,18,19,20! I did it Sheri , I did it 11.) I turn on the lights and quietly tell the children its time to wake up everyone. A nn sits up and says I stay dry Sheri I tell her great job Ann, now go into the bathroom and use the potty. Ann stretched and says I stayed quiet at nap too. Ann goes starts to walk towards the bathroom at the same time as another child, she says me first go potty! 12.) April 17, 2014 8:30 A.M Cognition and General Knowledge

Ann is walking over to the dramatic play area, she picks up a doll and she looks at it, then puts it down and pickups a different doll and says hi baby. She puts the doll down and gets the container of doll clothes. She takes the top off and begins to rummage through the doll clothes. She picks out a dress and tries to put it on the doll she has picked out. She starts to make grunting and humming sounds. Then she says cant do it! She asks walks over to her playmate and asks M you help me, in wont go on as she shows M the doll and the clothes. M looks at what Ann is doing, then walks away without saying anything. Ann puts the doll and the clothes down and follows M to the block area.
