Unit Title: The Baroque Period Content Area: Music Name: James Mast Grade Level: 9th-12th

Unit Summary: This unit is for 9th-12th grade music students. The purpose is to go more in depth with music. Normally the extent of music for high school is to pass out the music in a band class, play it, rehearse it for concerts, perform it in a concert or two, and then put it away for future years. This unit will be to go a little further than what most music classes do by learning more about the Baroque period. Some of the things will include analyzing a piece of music by the composer Johann Sebastian Bach, doing a timeline assignment, and much more. This will involve in class activities, in class discussions, take home assignments, and using online resources. Not only will this give the students a better understanding of the music but it will give them a better idea on what composers do when they are writing a piece of music and how music was back in the 17th and 18th century. California Content Standards: 1.1: Read an instrumental or vocal score of up to four staves and explain how the elements of music are used. 1.4: Analyze and describe the use of musical elements and expressive devices (e.g., articulation, dynamic markings) in aural examples in a varied repertoire of music representing diverse genres, styles, and cultures. 1.5: Identify and explain a variety of compositional devices and techniques used to provide unity, variety, tension, and release in aural examples. 1.6: Analyze the use of form in a varied repertoire of music representing diverse genres, styles, and cultures. 3.1: Identify the sources of musical genres of the United States, trace the evolution of those genres, and cite well-known musicians associated with them. 3.5: Classify, by genre or style and historical period or culture, unfamiliar but representative aural examples of music and explain the reasoning for the classification. Big Ideas:

Johann Sebastian Bach was/is an important composer and has contributed a great amount to the world of
music. His music has impacted composers and compositions today. The music he composed is still performed today by many musicians, professional and students. The Baroque period is a unique time and place for music in which it helped develop to what it is today.

 Where the Baroque period lies in relationship to other periods of music. What is significant about the Baroque period.
Student Learning Objectives: This unit will teach students how to: Analyze a piece of music. Learn about the Baroque period. Learn the importance of dynamics, articulations, and orchestration within a piece. Understand how to read and put together chords. Know what is important about the Baroque period. Learn about Bach and his contributions to music. Learn some of the facts of the Baroque period that make it unique from other music periods. Assessment Plan: Entry-Level A discussion on a video on a modern baroque ensemble performance. Assessment Plan: Formative A quiz on the characteristics that make the baroque period unique. Critical thinking questions on if the new style of music (Baroque style) was embraced when it first came out, why or why not. Questions that ask how are the instruments from the Baroque period different from the modern instruments we have today. A Venn diagram on the music from the Baroque period vs. classical music today. Assessment Plan: Summative A presentation about a composer and a piece that he/she composed. A performance that will be done my small groups on music from the Baroque period. Lesson One: Students will learn unique aspects about the Baroque period like the genres that developed, techniques used in compositions, important composers, instruments used during the time, and the importance of Johann Sebastian Bach. They will do this by filling out guided notes that are provided, answering questions throughout the presentation, and by doing a quiz and other activities at the end of the presentation. This lesson involves the instructional strategies of Collection and Organization. Lesson Two: Students will learn how to analyze a section of a piece done by Johann Sebastian Bach. Through this they will learn how

a composer orchestrates different instruments, uses different compositional techniques, and how a composer will make the key go throughout the piece. They will do this by analyzing the piece ChristLag in Todesbanded (Sinfonia). As they do this they will have a series of questions to help guide them through the analysis so they know what to look for as they analyze the piece. This lesson involves the instructional strategies of Organization, Presentation, and Collection. Lesson Three: Students will learn more in depth about a composer and some of the pieces he/she did during their lifetime. They will do this by putting together a timeline on the Baroque period. This activity will put the students in different groups. Each group will pick a composer from the Baroque period to talk about. After they choose a composer they will choose two pieces by the composer to talk about as well. Each input on the timeline will involve a picture, summary, and a video link if it is a song. This lesson involves the instructional strategies of Communication, Collaboration, and Interaction. Unit Resources:
