Rationale

This unit entitled Matter is designed for 3rd grade. The unit will integrate many academic disciplines while teaching students about matter with specifics such as the three states, how matter is measured and the different way the states of matter can change.

Students will do a variety of activities to enhance their learning. First the students explore the concept of matter and its properties. Then the students will explore the states of matter through a hands-on sorting activity. The students will then learn about how matter can change states in a root beer float inquiry and a virtual story book. Following the changing of states will be the different ways, physical and chemical, matter can be changed students will learn through inquiry as well as a video. Finally the students will learn how to measure matter.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Education Standards, 3.2.3.A1 Differentiate between properties of objects such as size, shape, and weight and properties of materials that make up the objects such as color, texture, and hardness. Differentiate between the three states of matter, classifying a substance as a solid, liquid, or gas. 3.2.3.A2 Recognize that all objects and materials in the world are made of matter. 3.2.3.A3 Demonstrate how heating and cooling may cause changes in the properties of materials including phase changes. 3.2.3.A4 Use basic reactions to demonstrate observable changes in properties of matter (e.g., burning, cooking). 2.3.3.B Identify a measurable characteristic of an object and select appropriate standard or non-standard unit of measure and tool, and determine the measurement to a specified level of accuracy. Rationale
The students will be producing works of art, speaking and listening during discussions, applying process knowledge that enables them to become independent leaders thought inquiry and design, and study the dynamics of earth science, which includes the studies of forces of nature that build earth and wear down earth.

When the unit is complete, the students will be able to describe different types of matter, as well as their properties providing them with the ability to differentiate between them. They will also understand the various changes matter can undergo, as well as how to measure matter. This content is key to a students ability to understanding, explore, and explain the natural world around them.
