From a high level DAS is essentially storage devices connected directly to computers without the complexities and added costs of SAN or NAS networking components like switches etc. A standard PC or server with an internal hard drive is the simplest form of Direct Attached Storage although DAS can !e much more sophisticated than this. "ypically we think of DAS as a single computer system connected to a single storage device. "he storage device can !e a small external disk array an enclosure holding a few disks or up to a large multi!ay enclosure holding tens of hard drives. #n the example here we see a single $indows computer attached to an external disk chassis !y a SCS# ca!le that connects an external port from the servers disk controller card to the disk chassis. "his ena!les the disk capacity to !e easily expanded !eyond the limitations of the computer chassis itself. "his is an example of how DAS is implemented with a low upfront cost. For single server disk storage usually resides inside the computer enclosure and is a simple form of DAS. %rgani&ations with multiple servers find the total cost of ownership of DAS to !e higher than other approaches like SAN or NAS. Draw!acks in large environments are difficulty of sharing unused capacity of the DAS unit with other servers and systems and a lack of a central point of management for multiple disk systems.
