Enduring Understandings:
An individuals identity is shaped by how they think about themselves, how others see them, and how society influences these perspectives.

Essential Questions:
How do external factors influence ones identity development? What elements contribute to an individuals identity? Is identity fixed or malleable?

Objectives:
Students will be able to: Examine character development in a text Engage in discussion with peers on a central topic related to the text Identify connections in character development, theme, and motifs throughout a text

Materials: Invisible Man texts Procedures: Group Work: Students will continue to work in groups on Ras, Clifton, IM comparison organizer After completing, students will write notes on board, so class can fill in the rest of the organizer Students will share information with classmates Discussion: As a class, discuss the connections between characters to fill in the overlapping spaces on organizer How do Ras and Clifton contribute to IMs sense of identity? What perspectives do Ras and Clifton represent? Discuss significance of Cliftons Sambo dolls and other images in story that are similar (Marys bank, Battle Royal etc.) How has IM changed after Cliftons death? Homework: Read Chapter 21, prepare for Socratic Seminar by thinking about central question: How is history created and defined? Assessment: Participation in discussion, notes from reading homework, collaboration with classmates Standards:
