Lander University Teacher Education Lesson Plan

Teacher Candidate: Morgan Chambers Subject/Grade: 2nd/Science Cobb

Lesson # ___5___

Date and Time of Lesson: April 16, 2014 To be determined by Mrs.

Learning Objective: The student will gain an understanding of how poles of magnets affect each other. Alignment with Standards: Standard 2-5: The student will demonstrate an understanding of force and motion by applying the properties of magnetism. (Physical Science) Indicator 2-5.2 Explain how the poles of magnets affect each other (that is, they attract and repel one another). Developmental Appropriateness or Cross-curricular connections: Cognitive- The students will need to have background knowledge of the following: what a magnet is, the different sides of magnets, and following directions. Physical- The students will be moving through stations in the classroom during a part of the lesson and I will be giving a demonstration of how magnets repel and attract each other so if a student needs to move to see they may do so. Social- Students will communicate with peers throughout the lesson, mainly when they are working in groups and moving from station to station. Emotional- All students will be actively engaged in the lesson and have an opportunity to participate. Assessment(s) of the Objectives Lesson Objective Assessment of the Objective Use of Formative Assessment The data received from the assessment will help to guide further instruction of the writing process. If there are any areas that the students struggle with, it will be reviewed.

The student will have an understanding of how poles of magnets affect each other with at least 80% accuracy. (Indicator 2-5.2)

Pre- As a class, we will discuss how magnets work, and how their poles interact with each other. The students will watch a brain pop on magnets. During- The students will watch as I demonstrate how the poles of magnets attract and repel each other. Then they will complete the workbook pages on magnets. Post- To build off attraction of magnets, the students will be put into groups and work through stations determining if objects are attracted to magnets.

Accommodations: For students who may finish early, I will allow them to read silently until we move to the next part of the lesson, if they desire. For students who may be working at a slower place or struggling I will allow them to work with a early finisher if needed. When the students are broken up into groups I will make sure that students who may struggle are paired together with a high achieving student so that they may help them. Materials: Pencils Science workbooks Magnet kit Worksheet for stations Promethean board Paper clip Penny Soda can Key Book Glasses Earring Spoon Chair Procedures: Motivation techniques-To gain the interest of the students I will give them a summary of the lesson and let them know that the will be working hands on with the magnets, if they listen and follow directions at during the first part of the lesson. I will also show them how magnets attract and repel each other in a demonstration using iron flakes. Instructional strategies- 1.The students, as a class, will discuss what they know about magnets and how they work. 2. The students will watch a brain pop on magnets. 3. The students will then work in their workbooks reading about magnets and answering questions that go along with the text. 4. As we are doing this as a class, I will demonstrate how magnets attract and repel each other to the class through various examples. 5. Once they students have completed the workbook pages, I will allow them to pass around the magnets and see first-hand how the poles repel and attract each other. 6. To go along with this, the students will be given a worksheet to with pictures of objects and predict if it will attract to the magnet or not (is it magnetic?) 7. Then the students will be put into groups and work through stations around the room to see if their predictions about the objects attracting to the magnet were correct or not. Probing questions- What happens if the poles if two magnets repel each other? What happens if the poles of two magnets attract each other? How do you know if an object is attracted to a magnet? What types of materials are magnetic? Activity Analysis: Activity 1- The students, as a class, will discuss how magnets work, and how their poles interact with each other. Then the students will watch a brain pop on magnets. This activity supports the lesson objective because it introduces the lesson and also allows the students to discuss prior knowledge they have about magnets before the lesson. This activity stems from the students characteristics because there are many students who love science and enjoy participating in class. This also stems from the students need to have an introduction into new lessons before jumping straight in lesson. The technology used in this lesson will be the promethean board which the students will watch the brain pop video on.

Activity 2- During this part of the lesson the students will read their workbook pages on magnets and answer question pertaining to the passages that they read. During this time I will also be demonstrating to the class how poles of two magnets repel and attract each other through various examples. This activity supports the lesson object because the students will visual see how magnets repel and attract each other and they will work through the workbook pages reading and answer questions about magnets. This activity stems from the students characteristics and needs because many of the students need to visually see how concepts come together rather than just working through the workbook alone. There will not be any technology used during this part of the lesson because the students will be working in their workbooks and I will be giving the visual demonstration on magnets so the promethean board is not needed. Activity 3- Then students will be given a worksheet with different objects and they will predict if the object will attract to the magnet. After they have made their predications, the students will be put in groups and move through stations around the room to see hands on if their predictions were correct. This activity supports the lesson objective because it allows the students to see how magnets can attract to other objects rather than just magnets. This activity stems from the students characteristics because there are many students who need to work hands-on and this activity allows them to do so. It also stems from the students need to be able to get up and move around the room during lessons, and by moving around from station to station this activity allows them to do that. The technology used during this part of the lesson will be the promethean board to display the worksheet that the students are working on so if they need to see the worksheet in a bigger view they may refer to the board.
