Enduring Understandings:
It is important to be aware of different cultural, historical, and sociological perspectives when reading and discussing literature

Essential Questions:
How does religion form a community? How does a hero become a tragic hero? How can differing ideologies exist in a community or between communities? Can differing ideologies coexist?

Objectives: Students will be able to: Examine character development over the course of a text Identify motifs and themes in a text, particularly pertaining to religion, community, conflict, and family Materials: Things Fall Apart texts, copies of group presentation graphic organizer Procedures: Warm Up: Ask students to share their reactions to, thoughts, or questions about the homework reading Discussion: Students will spend the first half of class discussing the homework reading Teacher will prompt students to consider whether Okonkwo is a hero or a tragic hero based on the events in the previous chapters, to connect to one of the unit essential questions Teacher will ask students how they think Okonkwos character has changed over the past few chapters, if it has changed Ask students guiding questions connected to other unit essential questions What have we learned about Umuofia based on the reaction to Okonkwos crime? o How have others in the community reacted to Okonkwos exile? After discussing chapters for about 20 minutes, teacher will move conversation to group presentations on reading, which will begin tomorrow Ask for questions about presentation Pass out graphic organizers to students to guide analysis of assigned chapter for presentation Assign one side of the classroom Ch. 12 to work on filling in organizer as practice, assign other side of the room Ch. 13 Students will work in pairs or small groups to fill in as much of organizer as possible Closing: Teacher will ask for any remaining student questions Teacher will ask a few students from each group to share something they had written on their organizer Homework: Read Ch. 14-19, presenting groups should be ready to share on their chapter Assessment: Participation in discussion, collaboration with classmates, answering of text-based questions Standards:
CC.1.2.9-10.A: Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text. CC.1.2.9-10.B: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences and conclusions based on an authors explicit assumptions and beliefs
