stubborn, enlighten the dull and make the almighty Chuck Norris shed a tear. Quite the deadly armament. Purpose: the reason why something is done or used : the aim or intention of something (Merriam Webster). We focus on Purpose because without it, there would be no point. The reader needs to have that sense of accomplishment, this is done by purpose. ! ! To begin with, ask yourself what it is you want to do when writing this paper. How

do you want the reader to feel afterwards? There are many things you can do with purpose; do you want to inform, entertain, or persuade? If you wish to educate, then do your research and site your sources. If you wish to amuse someone, then write an epic, depicting a character going through many challenges that will have the reader on the edge of their seat. ! ! With purpose you can inuence anyone. It was Aristotle who came up with the

three forms of persuasion Ethos, Logos and Pathos. Using these are very benecial because it is a motivating factor. For example, If i wanted someone to donate money to an organization that saves whales, I would do it by appealing to Pathos. Since the moratorium in 1986, the worldwide ban of whaling, over 15,000 whales have been slaughtered. The assaulting countries are Japan, Iceland, and Norway, who hunt these creatures illegally for their meat and oil. Notice the word choice, slaughtered I could

You could even say something like Be a hero and donate today! to make the reader think, Oh! I want to be a hero!. Perhaps show a picture detailing the horrors of the process, to shock the audience into action. By adding statistics and facts to your paper you are appealing to Logos, which adds validity to your statement. When people see those numbers it tends to make it less abstract to the reader, therefore Logos is very important. Ethos is of great signicance. A quote from a successful marine biologist would add reliability. For example, Experts with the WWF foundation say, Whales are at the top of the food chain and have an important role in the overall health of the marine environment. Therefore, the meaning of this quote would hold that an ecosystem without whales would be devastating to other sea life. ! !

As you can see, purpose coupled with persuasion is an impressive addition to

your artillery. Once you have the direction of your paper planned out make sure you have a well rounded argument. Just remember that purpose is the driving force and knows no limits. The weapon is Purpose, while Ethos, Logos, and Pathos is your ammunition.!

Reection Letter! ! This essay was fun to write. At rst, I couldn't think of how to start it out. But,

then the rst sentence slipped out, Purpose is the writers weapon. After that it just seemed to ow. I was able to work the Weapon idea throughout my paper, which I thought added a lot to my work. I ran into the problem of repeating the word weapon so I thought about it and came up with Ammunition, Armament, and Artillery, which I was able to replace. The workshops were very helpful, and everyones advice was very clear and thoughtful. Today, I worked with Loren. Her essay was very good. She mentioned in her essay something like What is the meaning of life? and it reminded me of a book I read in the summer, so I suggested that a quote from The Alchemist would make it stronger. Her very rst sentence I suggested that she ip it to make a better grabber for the reader. Also, she helped me by pointing out that I repeated words such as, Persuade, inform, and entertain. I was able to nd replacement words, that I liked better, so it ended up being a good exercise. Overall, this paper benetted me by analyzing Purpose and researching more on Ethos, Logos, and Pathos. !
