Curriculum Standards Description and Background The lesson will begin by having students review their ability to count objects up to the number 7. Students will then be able to view objects Information being counted up to 8 or 9 by using two different color objects. Once
viewed, students must assist with making a stack of 8 or 9 of cubes using two different colors. Lastly, students will be able to display their understanding by creating a stack of 9 by themselves.

Lesson Objectives

The student will be able to count up to 9 items with 100% accuracy.

Varying Objectives for Individuals Needs

For students who do not understand the material they will be asked to use one color to create the specific number asked. Students who have already mastered the concept they will be asked to create a number sentence with their combinations. Examples will be given to students prior to being asked. For ELL students they will be assisted by a native English Speaking student.

Statement of Purpose

The purpose of this lesson is to prepare students for Kindergarten, where they must at least know how to count to 20 and demonstrate that the last count indicates how many were counted. This lesson allows students to begin counting larger numbers that will gradually help student with their counting.

Anticipatory Set

Students will begin by participating in an interactive game online using the Smart Board. The specific game will have students count a specific number of things. This will also help students with their number recognition.

Part II: IMPLEMENTATION


The lesson will being with a review of the numbers 6 and 7. I will lay out either 6 or 7 counters. Together we will count the number of counters presented. Students will then be asked to close their eyes. The counters will be randomly divided and placed in my two hands. Students will then open their eyes and have to choose a hand then count the numbers placed in the chosen hand. This will be repeated with the other hand. Students will be told that X- number of counters plus Y- number of counters equal (6 or 7) counters.

Pre-assessment

Teacher Modeling or Demonstration

Cubes will displayed for students. I will model how to build a stack of eight counters using both green and yellow snap cubes. I will stack six green cubes and count aloud, then continue by adding yellow cubes. I will inform students that the last number I counted was 8, so there are 8 cubes in my stack will then count the cubes of each color. I will flip the stack of the two colored stack and count the cubes to show that even when flipped there are still the same number of cubes. Lastly I will break the one stack into two smaller stacks.

Guided Practice

Individual students will help me build a stack made of nine green and yellow cubes. Students will count along as I count the number of cubes of each color and then the total number of cubes in the stack. I will flip over the cube stack and repeat the process. How many are there? How many are there all together? How many green cubes are in the stack? How many yellow cubes are in the stack?

Checking for Understanding

Independent Practice Closure

Individual students will take turns building stacks of eight and nine cubes with different combinations of green and yellow cubes. To conclude the lesson students will go over their combinations. Also we will do more interactive games on the Smart Board that relate to number recognition. ( Numbers 1-10)

Assessment (attach to lesson plan) Extension Activities

Attached Each question will be asked verbally to the students. Students will be asked make 8 or 9 at home using household items. Student will be asked to also share this with their parents when completed.

Technology

Students will be able to participate in an interactive game online using the Smart Board. The specific game will have students count a specific number of things. This will also help students with their number recognition. The Arts: Students will be able to draw pictures of either 6 or 7 items.

Connection Across the Curriculum

Health: Students will be informed that they can also count different sorts of items, even fruits and vegetables. The fact that both fruits and vegetables are healthy with be stressed to students.

Physical Education: Before starting the lesson students will be able to dance to specific music for 1 minute.

PART III: REFLECTION


A strength of the lesson is that more than one manipulative was used during the lesson. Students will not get bored with just using one manipulative. A weakness of the lesson could not be found.

I would use more complex numbers for students that have a solid foundation of creating the numbers up to 9. Also the written form of the number should be visible of the numbers focused on. Some students know how to count up to nine but cannot recognize its written form.
