Summative Test On Bias

Murielle Hoffman #7 8B Oct. 4 2013

Document #1: I believe this is a letter written by a person in an Indian tribe, possibly writing to an Indian Chief. I think this document is bias against The Indian Removal Act because the document states, The evil, Sir, is enormous; the inevitable suffering incalculable, and Nations of dependent Indians, against their will, under color of law, are driven from their homes into the wilderness. Also, the person says, Our friends will view this measure with sorrow, and our enemies alone with joy, which indicates the author of this letter is friends amongst the Indians and therefore one of them, proving the fact that this document is bias against the Indian Removal Act. Document #2: I believe this is also a letter written from someone amongst an Indian tribe and the letter is to the government pleading with them by saying, We have no hope unless you will help us we ask that you not send usat this time of year. If you do we shall die, our wives will die or our children will die I think this is bias against the Indian Removal Act because the writer clearly states, We have no hope, We are in trouble, Sir, our hearts are very heavy, pleading with the white men to spare their children and wives. Document #3: I think this document was written by an Indian because in the first sentence of the document they say, Ever since [the whites came]... meaning the author themselves cannot be apart of the whites but of the Indians. I think the document/person is bias against the Indian Removal Act because the writer says, We have been made to drink of the bitter cup of humiliation; treated like dogs therefore saying the descrimination of the Indians came from the whites. Document #4: I think this document is a letter to this white mans children saying how it was like with the Cherokee Indians and how he was bias against the Indian Removal Act because he says, I met and became acquainted with many of the Cherokee Indians, hunting with them by day and sleeping around their camp fires by night. The author also states his mutual

friendship with the Cherokees by saying, I learned to speak their language, and they taught me the arts of trailing and building traps and snares. He also explains his bond with the tribe by saying On one of my long hunts in the fall of 1829, I found a young Cherokee who had been shot by roving band of hunters Weak from loss of blood I carried him to a spring, bathed and banaged the bullet wound and built shelter I nursed and protected him feeding him on chestnuts and toasted deer meat When he was able to travel, I accompanied him to the home of his people and remained so long that I was given up for lost. He states his care for the tribe and their bond. Some other reasons I believe this man is bias against the Indian Removal Act, because he says I saw helpless Cherokees arrested and dragged from their homes which suggests he had sympathy and a sadness to see his companies being removed. He says, One can never forget the sadness and solemnity of that morning. Document #5: Document #6: I think this article was written by a company bias against fracking because it says, ...Sands pipeline will destroy our greatest northern forest, threaten our drinking water and fuel more global warming. It states facts that may or may not be complete ly true but pushes to believe and convince everyone that it is. Arctic Oil; The Shell Oil Company wants to drill for climate-destroying fuel in the heart of the polar bears habitat, where an oil spill could prove catastrophic, this could be an explain of elaborating the facts. Document #7: I think this document is written by an oil company trying to promote fracking. The oil company is bias for fracking because theyre the ones getting paid from this. Natural gas extracted from shale rock formations has become the fastest-growing source of gas in the United States. Were also fueling job growth and strengthening local economies. The natural gas industry invested more than $12 billion in Pennsylvania in 2011 while supporting more than 200,000 jobs across the region. These are some quotes from the text showing that as an oil company themselves, they choose to only write the pros of fracking and how they neither confirm nor deny the safety of fracking.
