Literacy Lesson Plan

Literacy Lesson Plan for Beginning Reader: McKenzie was identified as a beginner or early reader when she completed a literacy assessment. McKenzie displayed fluency when reading the short stories, she correctly identified beginning sounds and rhyming words. McKenzie shows syllabic knowledge when pointing to each word as she reads. She knows more than 25 sight words. McKenzie knows all of the alphabet.

Diet:
Fluency- Readers theatre Learning Objectives: Objective The student will read orally a readers theatre activity

Standard of Learning K.1 The student will demonstrate growth in the use of oral language. c) Participate in oral generation of language experience narratives. d) Participate in creative dramatics.

Assessment Students will read the readers theatre titled Magic Carpet.

Materials needed: List all materials needed o Magic Carpet script Time for this part of lesson: What part of 30 minute lesson will be used for this part? o 12 minutes

Procedure: Explain how this part of lesson will be carried out o The students will be given the script which is prefaced by an introduction: We are going to do a Readers Theatre about a magic carpet today! We have to decide which role we want to play, so I will assign each of you a role. Then we will read the script together one time through. After that we will each take our roles and act them out! o Assign a student a role. o The Narrator will be assigned to the instructor and the two remaining roles will be assigned to the two students. o Read the script altogether with the students one time through. o Perform the script!

Comprehension Learning Objectives: Objective The students will retell the story of the Magic Carpet Ride within a beginning, middle, and end grid.

Standard of Learning K.9 The student will demonstrate comprehension of fictional texts. e) Use story language in discussions and retellings. f) Retell familiar stories, using beginning, middle, and end.

Assessment The student will complete the grid with the sentence cut-outs from the story in the correct sequence and within the correct areas of the plot.

Procedure: Explain how this part of lesson will be carried out o The students have already read the story within the Readers Theatre section of this lesson plan. o When the story is finished the student will be introduced to the B/M/E grid and they will be given the sentence cut-outs to place in the following categories. o The instructor will help them read the cut-outs if need be. Magic Carpet

Narrator: [Two kids found a rug leaning by a trashcan as they were walking home from school.] Alex: Look at this old rug. Sam: That rug looks very dirty. Alex: We should dust it off. Sam: Woah, did the carpet just move when you touched it? Alex: Yes I think it did! Is the carpet alive? Sam: Alex, look! The carpet is flying above the ground! Alex: Lets sit on it! Sam: Are you sure it is safe? Alex: Come on Sam, have you ever seen a magic carpet before? Sam: No but Im scared! Narrator: [Alex and Sam get on the carpet and it began to fly] Alex: Look down there! Do you see the all the cars on the highway? Sam: Yes, they look like ants! Look at the birds that are flying next to us! Alex: I feel like a bird on this magic carpet! Sam: Alex, it is getting late, maybe we should go home. Alex: Youre right Sam. I will fly you home. Narrator: [Alex steered the carpet in the direction of Sams house and they began to descend.] Sam: This magic carpet ride was so great, wait until I tell my mom! Alex: I dont think she will believe you. Sam: I will show her the carpet to show her that it is real. Narrator: (when they landed the carpet went limp and became a rug again. The magic appeared to be gone.)

Sam and Alex found a carpet.

The carpet moved when they touched it.

Sam and Alex sat on the carpet and they flew.

The cars seemed small like ants.

The birds were flying next to them.

Sam had to go home.

When they landed the carpet lost its magic.
