Abstract

The research aimed to study the influence of border trade, cultural
assimilation, and public policy regarding (the border trade and cultural encouragement)
on the ways of life of people in the Thai border community to Laos and Cambodia.
In the past, wars causing by boundary lines problems and communism affected
the peoples lives along the border.

The government of General Chatchai Chunhawan announced the state
policy in changing the battle to trade field; changing the dimension of war to
peace through border trade and cultural assimilation with concentration on
economic cooperation, border trade, investment, and bi-lateral customs practice.

The ways of life in border community changed in a positive way;
sufficiency on consumer products, better job opportunity, better income. In
addition, the cultural assimilation on language - Thai, Laotian, and Cambodian,
religion practice, and public policy (border trade and cultural encouragement)
making a growth on economic, trade and commerce expansion, investment,
and infrastructure development.

The purposes of this research 1) To study the situation of the ways of life
of people in border community affected by the border trade, cultural assimilation,

and public policy regarding (border trade and cultural encouragement) 2) To

study the relationship among the border trade, cultural assimilation, and public
policy (border trade and cultural encouragement) on the ways of life of people
in border community.

A combination between quantitative and qualitative research methods
was used. The quantitative data was collected by using a questionnaire and the
sample was 397 people residing at 4 border communities; Thasadet Indochina
market (Nongkhai province), Rakkaewsrimongkol Indochina market (Mukdahan
province), Baan Klongluek- Rongklue market (Srakaew province), and Baan Hadlek
(Trad province). The qualitative data was collected by using in-depth interview
from 16 people including buyers and sellers in the border markets, chief custom
officers, and mayors.

The quantitative data was analyzed by using descriptive statistic, mean,
standard deviation, skewness, kurtosis, Hierarchical regression analysis, and linear
structure relationship done by LISREL technique Confirmatory factor analysis and
the test for goodness of fit between the hypothesis model and the empirical
data. The qualitative data was analyzed by data reduction, data display, interpretation, and qualitative conclusion.

The research results indicated that:

1) In terms of quantitative research, the relationship among the border
trade, the cultural assimilation, and the public policy regarding (broader trade
and cultural encouragement) affecting the ways of life of the in the border
community had a model of the linear structural equation effectiveness fitted to
and had a statistical significance towards the empirical data. ( X = 127.78, df
= 65, p-value = 0.0001, GFI = 0.96, AGFI = 0.93, RMR = 0.026, RMSEA = 0.049,
CN = 290.46) In addition, it was found that the three variables; public policy

26

regarding (border trade and cultural encouragement) cultural assimilation, and

border trade, had an effect on the ways of life overall.

2) In terms of qualitative research, the people residing along the borders
to Laos and Cambodia had a long close relationship, cultural assimilation on language - Thai, Laotian, and Cambodian, religion practice, lateral customs practice.
These could encourage and promote cooperation and peace along the borders;
expand and upgrade the border trade and commerce from a local level to an
international level; expand investment; and develop infrastructure. The better
ways of life could be found due to the sufficiency on consumer products, job
opportunity, and higher income. However, smuggling was still found according
to the economic growth, the demand of cheap tax-free goods, the motivation
on higher income, and the insufficiency of officers along the vast border lines.
