like something people are naturally born with. People assume that we are born knowing what it is to be a man or women. But some experts argue that gender is a social construction in which sexes are taught what gender is appropriate for them. It is almost like a play and if someone steers away from the gender script then they have to face the consequences. Furthermore, the idea that gender is not something youre born with can cause deep confusion in people that can sometimes lead to violence. I know that when I first heard about transgender people I couldnt really grasp the concept of a women stuck in a mans body. Since I didnt know what they were going through first hand it was easy to dismiss it as not real. But recently I watch a film called A Girl Like Me: The Gwen Araujo story; which was based on real events of a young transgender women who was beaten to death by a group of boys. Her story really resonated with me because after I was this film I felt more open minded about the whole sub gender topic. My essay deals with the concept that gender is not something you biologically born with but actually a social performance we take part in every day. Gender is nothing more but an act and depending on how well we play our part we either get rewarded or punished. If the idea that gender is something were biologically born with goes away then sub genders will be allowed to flourish and through that become normal. Then are society will lose another reason to hate or discriminate people who dont fit their views of what is social acceptable.

Pinto 2 Sources Butler, Judith. "Performative Acts and Gender Constitution: An Essay in Phenomenology and Feminist Theory." Theatre Journal Vol. 40.No.4 (1988): 519-31. Web. 22 Mar. 2014. In this article Judith Butler raises the idea that gender is a play that we are all taking part of. She also explains how seeing someone of a sub gender on a stage is ok rather than on the bus. Thats because on the bus you no longer can distinguish between an act or reality. She challenges the idea that gender is biological and backs it up with reasons of her own. I can use her examples and claims to help back up my idea that gender is a soil performance just as she has stated. She also has many deep philosophical ideas that I can incorporate in my own essay to make the reader think harder about my topic.

A Girl Like Me: The Gwen Araujo Story. Dir. Agnieszka Holland. Perf. J.D Pardo, Leela Savasta, Henry Darrow and Lupe Ontiveros. 2006. Film. YouTube, Google. This film is based on a true story and follows the life a Gwen Araujo. She was a transgender female who was brutally murdered by a group of boys. The film show the hardship Gwen went through as she grew up. She had to fight for acceptance from not only society but her family as well. I can use the film as an example of the brutality society has towards people how dont fit the gender norms. That is a claim Im making and this film can help back it up.

Satrapi, Marjane. Persepolis 2: The Story of a Return. New York: Pantheon, 2004. Print. In the graphic novel Persepolis 2 you learn about a young woman and her struggle to find herself. Even though Marji was a heterosexual woman the society she moved to had a different script for her to follow than in her home country. So Marji lost who she felt she was as a person all due to the script her new society had for her. So in other words, Marji felt like she knew who she was when moving to this country but the society there made her into a new person.

Lorber, Judith. "Night to his Day: The Social Construction of Gender." Paradoxes of gender 1 (1994): 1-8. In this article Lorber discusses how gender is so sown into our society that we dont even think twice about it. Even though gender is everywhere and we are all doing gender. He explains how the only way we pay attention to gender is when someone disrupts our expectations of how men and women are supposed to act. For my essay I want to explain how people are so blind about gender that they dont even think twice about it. Also Lorber discusses how gender is a social construction which is another claim I will be discussing in my. So it would be good to cite another person that shares the same idea as I do.
