Activity Title: Flower Power-Fun with Words Submitted By: Samantha Furr, Katie Whaley, Halie Tonn Targeted Grade Level: Kindergarten Challenge Level: _____Developing _X_Achieving ____Extending

Academic Skill or Domain Area(s): RF.k.2 Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds. Material List: Flower pots Sharpie marker Flower cards for holding the pictures Popsicle sticks Glue and tape Clipart/pictures Directions & Procedures: 1. We will state our names and introduce ourselves to the students at the table. 2. We will tell the students to start at one flower pot and then rotate to another flower pot once they are finished with the other flower pot. 3. We will than state that the flower pots each have a picture on the flower that resembles a word. 4. The students will have to figure out how many syllables that word, on that specific flower pot has. 5. We will show and demonstrate an example of how the students can guess their answer by clapping and using the rubber band trick for them to see. 6. Once they tell us their answer we will turn the flower pot around and the correct number of syllables will be on the back of the flower pot. 7. The students will directly receive feedback and we can help them to reach the right answer if they were incorrect. 8. If the student has answered the number of syllables correctly, than they will rotate to the new flower pot with a new word and picture. 9. If the students answered with the wrong number of syllables than we will use the rubber band trick or clapping to help them reach the correct answer. Differentiations: For the more advanced students we will have a few flower pots with more than three syllables set aside, that we can pull out if needed. For those struggling with three or less syllables we will give more individualized attention. Also students that are lower level can use the flower pot words for initial, middle and ending sounds of the words. Parent Promptings:

The parents can assist their children by using the rubber band trick that we can/will model for them. This trick has the students pretending to hold a rubber band. As the parent and students stretch the word out they also move their hands acting as if they are pulling a rubber band. For example: the word car is only one syllable. The parents will hold their hands out as a visual aide for their child so they can pretend it is a rubber band. Since car is one syllable they will move their hands once. Another way the parents can aide in this lesson is to clap the number of syllables as the child reads and stretches the word. This can be modeled to the parents by us showing them a way they can help their child when or if they guess the wrong amount of syllables. Also we can model this as well if they answer with the correct answer because we can model a different way of showing how to reach that answer. The start of the lesson will include us demonstrating an example of using the rubber band trick or clapping.
