Context for Learning: Traditional one teacher classroom. 2 IEPs- Speech, delayed reading/ learning disability. No ELLs. 26 students (13 boys, 13 girls). 13 African American, 7 Caucasian, 6 Asian. . Function of the Lesson (check all that apply): ! Introduce New Skill or Content ! Practice ! Review ! Remediation/Reteaching

Content Standards: 3.NF.A.3 Explain equivalent of fractions in special cases, and compare fractions by reasoning about their size.

! !

Learning Objectives: Students will be able to write a fraction to describe what part of a region is shaded. They will become familiar with the terms numerator and denominator and be able to identify them in fractions. They will also be able to incorporate games and online quizzes to be able to identify equal fractions. Academic Language (or A.L. Demands, A.L. Objectives): Fractions, Equivalent Fractions, Graphic Representation, Numerator, Denominator.

! Instructional Materials and Support: Computers, WiFi, Smartboard, Speakers, Paper, Crayons. ! Prior Knowledge: Division !

Assessments:

! ! ! !

Pre-Assessment for the unit: Have students complete quiz online at www.ixl.com and assess their knowledge of fractions and equivalent fractions before the lesson begins. Assessment(s) during the lesson: Only assess what was taught Assessment(s) at the end of the lesson: Clear up misconceptions Post-Assessment for the unit: Have students complete the same quiz online at www.ixl.com and see how much quicker and more accurately they can complete the quiz.

! Strategies & Learning Tasks !

Introduction: Play YouTube video Mister Rs Songs for Teaching Fractions to get students excited about the lesson and help them see what fractions are.

Presentation/Explicit Instruction: Give each students a piece of white paper and have them fold it in half. Now explain that you have divided a whole paper into two equal halves and explain how a fraction is simply a part of a whole. Have students color in half of the paper and explain that now they have colored in ! of the paper and that is just half of a whole. Play the YouTube video about numerators and denominators to teach the children what those two words mean. Then fold the paper again and demonstrate to the class how the parts of ! or 2/4 are equal. This will introduce the lesson of equal fractions to the students.

! !

Structured Practice/Exploration: Go on the SmartBoard and play the pizza party fraction game online with the class to help them learn together what parts of a whole different fractions stand for. Doing this as a class will help students learn and grow together with the teachers instruction and guidance. Guided Practice/Specific Feedback: Have the students divide into pairs and use partners for this activity. Using a blank paper and crayons with the prior knowledge of the last paper activity used to teach the lesson, the students will make their own papers to demonstrate a fraction. Each student will be assigned a fraction individually that they must demonstrate using that paper (1/4, ", 1/8, etc.). The students will make these fractions by folding and then coloring a portion of the paper to create the fraction. The partners will then show the other partner and ask them to guess what fraction they are supposed to be demonstrating. The teacher will go around and have each pair show her what they have come up and provide any feedback and support as needed. After the students all have their papers done correctly give them a few minutes to go around the room and find their match. They will have to find the other student who has the fraction that is equal to their own. The teacher can then make sure that the students have found the right match.

!
Independent Practice/Application: Have students get on their individual computers and play online fraction games. There are a variety of different games that the children can choose from to play and learn more about fractions. As they advance they can choose harder games to continue challenging themselves. This will help the students apply the lessons that have just been taught in a fun manner giving them independence to choose what games they play and practice at their own pace.

! ! !

Closure: Come back together as a class and discuss what they learned about fractions today. Have the pairs share with the class and show them their fraction papers that they have made. The students can share and show the class why their partner is their equal match. This will help wrap up the lesson and answer any questions individuals still may have. Differentiation, Individualized Instruction, and Assessment: Allow extra time for the two students on IEPs to complete the online activities and games. These students may also have the option of doing only one game during the class time instead of doing variety of games so that they can focus solely on that activity. Research and Theory: Uses many aspects of Blooms Taxonomy: Creating- creating their own fractions using papers and crayons. Evaluating- students have to evaluate their own work and others to see if it is correct. Analyzing- analyzing their partners fractions to see if they are correct and if their fractions match their own. Applying: playing the games to apply what they know and have learned. Understanding- using the games and videos to help understand what they are being taught. Remembering- the fun lessons and partner interaction will help the students remember the lesson.
