ADVANCED COMPOSITE CERAMICS Abstract

Todays composite ceramics have acquired special status for high volume application due to their light weight, high temperature sustenance, corrosion resistance, high strength and high toughness. Advanced composite ceramics finds wide applications in every field including aircraft, space, marine industry, defence, construction, automotives, energy generation units, medical science and general application. Main emphasis has been laid on composite ceramics of: High temperature superconductors Magnetic materials with higher magnetic fields Piezoelectric materials for sensors and buzzers Optical composite ceramics for ultraviolet and infrared sensors Electro-optic materials for use in color filters and in memory-storage devices Refractory materials for high temperature furnaces Structural material for nuclear reactors and Ceramic composites for use in medical science for drug delivery, artificial bones, etc.

Few examples of composite ceramics are Carbon nanotubes-ceramic composites, Fibre reinforced glass/glass-ceramic matrix composites, Magnesia-spinel composite refractory materials, etc. In this paper, we have reviewed the application of composite ceramics in various engineering and medical fields. Current state of standard of composite ceramic and potential to emerge as future material are reviewed in light of their role as emerging technologies. Thus, we conclude that the field of composite ceramic has broadened to cover every class of materials including ceramics, polymers, magnetic materials, semiconductors as well as biomaterials and nano materials for use in various engineering and medical fields. However the use of advanced composite ceramics is confined to aerospace industries only in our country. The reason lies behind the high cost, lack of access to technology and practices and inability to manufacture locally. It is hoped that above shortcomings will be overcome in not to distant future and benefit will be reaped by all of us. By:PRABHAT KUMAR RAVI KUMAR SINGH KALKAR ANKIT ANIL 5TH Sem., METALLURGY VNIT
