TCNJ Lesson Plan

Team Building

Student Name: Keri Anacker School Name: Hopewell Elementary
Grade Level: 3
rd
grade Host Teachers Name: Ms. Hamilton

Guiding Questions:

What does teamwork entail?
How can I work cooperatively in my group?

Pre-lesson Assignments and/or Student Prior Knowledge (ex. background knowledge,
possible misconceptions, prior lesson content)

The students have been working in their Iditarod groups for the past few weeks. The students
might not fully understand how to be cooperative and how to foster teamwork when working
together to complete a common goal.

Standards:

9.1.4.C.1 Practice collaborative skills in groups, and explain how these skills assist in completing
tasks in different settings (at home, in school, and during play).
9.1.8.C.2 Demonstrate the use of compromise, consensus, and community building strategies for
carrying out different tasks, assignments, and projects.

Learning Objectives and Assessments:
Learning Objectives

Assessment
Students will be able to work in groups
effectively and cooperatively to complete a
given task.
Students will be working in groups and teacher
will visually monitor the groups, assessing for
cooperation. Students will fill out a sheet
asking about the role of each student in their
group and teacher will assess for teamwork.

Materials: (List all, include any online or book references)

Exit slip, human bridge object, paper, tape, puzzles,

Plan for distribution/cleanup of materials:

Materials will be placed in their stations while the students are at morning meeting. Ms. S. will
help pass out the exit slip papers. Also, Ms. Anacker will collect the exit slips at the end.

Lesson Beginning:

Teacher will begin by explaining that this lesson will be about teamwork and cooperation. She
will discuss how the students have been working in their Iditarod groups already so they should
be comfortable working together so we will be doing some fun activities to boost team spirits
and improve communication. Teacher will ask students to help her make a list of qualities of a
good team player on the board.

Step by Step plan (numbered):
1. Lesson beginning
2. Teacher will explain each station and have each group start at a different station.
- station 1: King of the Castle Students are given 10 pieces of recycled paper and a
yard of tape. They have only 10 minutes to work together to create the tallest castle.
-station 2: Puzzle Mania Students have to try to complete as many puzzles as they can
-station 3: Human Bridge Students stand in a line and they have to transfer an object
from the first person to each student down the line until the last person in line receives
the object *BUT students cant use their hands!* if they can do this, have them try it the
other way.
3. Teacher will use the chime to signal a 2 minute warning and then once again at 10
minutes to let the students know to switch stations.
4. After all 3 groups have completed all 3 stations, teacher will use the phrase 1 2 3 eyes
on me and ask students to return to their seats.
5. Teacher will explain the exit slip and hand one to each student to complete.
6. Closure

Closure:

Students will share some of their responses on the exit slip and teacher will summarize the
lesson, ending with why cooperation and teamwork is important. [Qualities of a good team
member: reliable, know how to communicate, theyre active and participate, good listeners, help
others, problem solver, respectful.]

Key Questions (that you will ask):

What did your group succeed at?
What did your group have trouble with?
How can we be better team players in the future?

Logistics:

Timing: 1 hour
-lesson beginning 10 minutes
-station work 30 minutes
-exit slip 10 minutes
-closure 5 minutes

Transitions: Teacher will use the class chime and the phrase 1 2 3 eyes on me to signal
for attention and give the next set of directions
Classroom Management: Students will be reminded to use quieter voices when working
in stations and to complete the exit slip silently. If the noise level gets too loud, teacher will turn
off the lights and call for attention.

Differentiation: Ms. Hamilton, Ms. S., and Ms. Anacker will all be monitoring a station. If any
groups have conflict, Ms. Anacker will mediate. Groups are already chosen and activities will be
given to certain groups based on appropriate level.
