Essential Questions
What are the parts of a flower? How do you label the parts of a flower? What is an acrostic
poem? How do you write an acrostic poem? How do you measure?

Pre-lesson Assessments
The smart board acti$ity will determine the students(s pre)knowled!e about plants and their
parts' The students should also ha$e knowled!e about what an acrostic poem is* because they
ha$e done one before in class'
Lesson Beginning
To be!in the day* students will act as scientists to obser$e the class plants and butterflies' They will
record all of their obser$ations* thou!hts* and +uestions in their science notebooks' ,nsure the class that
pictures and words can both be used and both to!ether are encoura!ed'

1' 2inally* we will talk about acrostic poems and what they are' Their topic for the poem will be
sprin!'
3' To !et the class started* students will !i$e ideas and 4 will write some of the words describe
sprin! on the board so that they ha$e ideas of what to write'
5' They will then paste the letters 6s)p)r)i)n)!7 on the !i$en paper and write their own acrostic
poems'
Differentiation
The smart board acti$ity will ha$e harder tasks then others* so e$eryone will be able to
participate' The students will ha$e a model to follow when drawin! and labelin! a flower in their
#ournal* but will also ha$e the option to try to draw a plant or flower on their own' The students
will be able to use ideas from the board for their acrostic poems* but for students who want a
challen!e* they can think of words not on the board'
Questions
Do all plants ha$e the same parts? What are words that describe sprin!?
Classroom Management
To ensure that all students are payin! attention durin! the smart board lesson* they will be
accountable for fillin! in the worksheet durin! the acti$ity'
Transitions
The students will be called to obser$e their plants and butterflies by table' They will then be
!i$en the acrostic poem material after the smart board acti$ity and after directions are !i$en'
Closing
To end the lesson* the students will be able to read their acrostic poems aloud to the class'
