Problem

Problem Scenario 3: You are asked to design a 30 minute engaging instructional lesson
for a PreK-20 grade of your choice, for a subject of your choice.

For my problem scenario I have chosen to teach tenth grade students how different activities
affect their heart rates. This 30 minute instructional lesson will allow students to perform an
experiment, providing hands on learning.

Objectives

Behavioral Objectives:
Students will participate in science experiment with a partner.
Students will constructively add to the class discussion at the end of the lesson.
Performance Objectives:
Students will learn what affects heart rate.
Students will preform various activities that affect their heart rate.
Students will learn how to average numbers.

Materials & Resources

Materials:
Stopwatch
Brown paper bags
Warm & ice cold water
Heart rate worksheet
Vocabulary words and definitions for Heart rate listed on board

Engaging Activities/Instructional
Strategies
Class Activity
Engage- The teacher will pose the above inquiry questions for the students. Teacher will split
students into groups of two, each with a worksheet outlining the different activities that affect
heart rate, and spaces for them to fill in their own heart rates after each activity. Student groups
will share as a whole which activities affect the heart rate, and how they affected their heart rate.
Explore- Student groups will start by measuring their resting heart rate for 60 seconds.
1. One student will count their heartbeats per minute while the other student keeps time.
They will repeat this three times and take their average resting heart rate.
2. Teacher will show students where they can find their pulse and how to get the average
of their resting heart rate.
3. Students will record their observations. Teacher will ask questions like: did this
activity make your heart rate increase or decrease? How can we use this knowledge to
our advantage? Why did you heart rate increase or decrease? What is the role that
oxygen and carbon dioxide factor into your heart rate?
Explain- The teacher will provide all science related terms and explain why the specific activities
increased or decreased the students heart rate. Discuss how some activities affect each person
differently.
Expand- the students will this of other things that may have an affect on their heart rate. They
will share their thoughts with the entire class and there will be a group discussion.
4

Students will use the websites listed below to both review and learn more about
heart rates.
Evaluate- the students will turn in their papers at the end of class with a two-paragraph response
to the questions: Why does your heart rate fluctuate? What have you learned form this
experiment?

Technology Required

Students will read about heart rates on this website:
American Heart Association
Students will compare their heart rates to healthy heart rates here:
Medical News Today
Students will learn how to lower their resting heart rate here:
Harvard Health

Assessment

CLASS ACTIVITY
Reflection
During the Expansion section of the lesson plan, the students will have time to use the
internet to research the provided and secure websites for Technology Integration. This will help
them find the answers to how their heart rates are affected and also how they can improve them.
During the Evaluation phase of the lesson plan, students are asked to perform tasks that
will have an affect on their heart rate. These timed activities include, breathing into a brown
paper bag, placing their hand in warm and cold water, deep breaths, and running up and down
stairs.
