Teacher: Mr.

Silvius
Class: Geography
Grade: 6
th
Location: Milledgeville High School
Date: 3/19/13
Duration: One class period (45 minutes)
Goals:
Students will learn about Lake Lanier and the environmental effects it can have on the
surrounding area.
Objectives:
Students will use construction paper shapes to make a model of their own fictitious town and
area around a lake.
Students will be able to use information presented in class to establish an opinion on human
made projects, such as Lake Lanier
State Standards Met:
A.8.11 Give examples of the causes and consequences of current global issues, such as the expansion of
global markets, the urbanization of the developing world, the consumption of natural resources, and the
extinction of species, and suggest possible responses by various individuals, groups, and nations
Anticipatory Set:
To begin the lesson, students will be given an introduction to the focus of the chapter, Lake Lanier.
After the short Power Point presenting this information, we will move on to the first part of a double
entry journal. Students will be asked to get out a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle of it.
On the left side, they are to write their initial opinions, questions, and reactions to the information they
just received. After they have completed the first part of their double entry journal, the main teaching
activity will begin.
Teaching activity:
To start out the activity, we will push two tables together. Or in a more spacious room, we would rope
off a section. The roped off section or combined tables will be at the center of our activity, which relies
mainly on student participation. After we have combined the tables, we will explain how this is their
own land that they now own and they need to manage it. We will invoke critical thinking of what is
necessary for them to establish a home, community, and eventually entire city. For example, they will
need roads to get to where they want to go, houses to build on the community, and then schools and
malls to allow growth of the city. This entire land will be based around an imaginary lake that they are
basing all of this building off of. Every time they establish a new aspect of their land, we will take time
to discuss the effects, positive and negative, that the newly established feature will have on the land and
community. They will display the expanding area by using pieces of construction paper we provide
them. Each piece of paper will represent different features. Once they have finished building their area
and discussing all of the effects associated with the building, the closing activity will take place.
Closure:
For the closing activity, students will do the other half of their double entry journal. To fill in the other
side, they will now write their new opinions, thoughts, and ideas of how the land around Lake Lanier
should be managed. They will write about these things by using the activity they just took part in along
with the information presented to them during the activity. All of the information will help form a
strong base for opinion and thought. Once they have completed the double entry journal, we will have
the students turn it in.
Assessment:
There will be formative and summative assessment during this lesson. The formative assessment will
take place during the activity in which they establish their lake and surrounding area. We will use
questioning throughout the lesson to assess whether the students understand the material being
taught. The double entry journal is our summative assessment. This is where we will truly see if the
students understood and grasped the ideas and information being taught.
Materials:
Rope/tables
Construction paper cutouts
Colored pencils
Accommodations:
There are no accommodations needed for this lesson.
