Title of Lesson: Observing and evaluating how to successfully prepare for an audition

Length of Time: 50 minute lesson (one class period)

Context: An informative lesson on observing and evaluating how to successfully prepare
for an audition and applying those methods for professional uses.

Objective: Demonstrate and apply how to successfully prepare for an audition by using
tools such as: monologues, cold readings, and resumes. This will enable the student to
continue with their theatre education on the university, community and professional
levels.

Accommodations: Create a rubric based on the ability of each particular student, and the
progress that they are making. Each students grade is compared to their individual
ability, not to the abilities of others. The rubric will be based on the information
presented in the PowerPoint and will test how much the students paid attention.

Introduction/Hook: Show the video of the Glee audition tapes to the class and then ask
the students what they thought about the auditions of these now famous actors.

Pre-Assessment/Prior Knowledge: Many of you have been involved with theatrical
performances prior to this lesson. I have been told that you just finished the performance
of Sleepy Hollow here at the school. Have any of you ever auditioned for a show before?
Today we will expand on that knowledge to discuss how to properly audition for a show
in the professional world.

Modeling: Demonstrate how to prepare for an audition by giving the students helpful
hints, guidelines, and suggestions from Broadway veterans. Also I will model how to
successfully perform a monologue at an audition prior to them performing their
monologue.

Student Activities: The students will read over the monologues given to them by the
teacher. A few volunteers will present their monologue to the class. Afterwards, the
students will be paired into groups and will read over scripts given to them by the
teacher. They will perform these scripts in front of the class and will be assessed on how
well they paid attention to the information presented in the PowerPoint. At the end of
class the students will fill out an audition form given to them by the teacher to test what
they have learned about the audition process.

Assessment: After I have presented the information needed to perform a successful cold
reading, I will hand out a script and separate them into groups. Then they will have time
to prepare, and will perform the script in front of the entire class. I will grade them
according to a rubric designed to go along with the information in the PowerPoint. Also
at the end of the lesson I will have the fill out an audition form and look over their work
to see if they used the information learned that day to fill the form out correctly.

Closure: (Internal Summary) Ask the group as a whole what they have learned about the
audition process. Then I will show them websites and theatres around the area for them to
continue their acting career. Afterwards, we will have a class discussion where the
students can feel free to ask the teacher any questions they might have about auditioning
and how to get involved with theatre on the professional level.
