Infant Observation
Setting !he setting of m" observation too# place at a home$ !he child I
observed %as a five month old t%in girl, she %ill be si& months tomorro%$ I chose her for
this observation because she %as alert and ver" active$ !here is no relationship bet%een
the infant and me$
Observation I began m" observation at '( )*pm and I %as %atching the infant in
her pla" pen$ She immediatel" reached for her pacifier, and then she began to cr"$ One of
her siblings came and rubbed her on her bac# and she got +uiet$ !he bab" then la" on her
bac# and #ic#ed her legs in the air %hile suc#ing her pacifier$ She began grabbing her
blan#et and covering her face %ith it$ ,ithout cr"ing she %as pic#ed up b" a friend and
started s+uee-ing the person.s finger$ !he infant sat up on the caregivers lap and began to
loo# all around and moving her toes open and close$ !he mother placed the small bab" in
her %al#er and she began to touch and grab hold to the to"s attached to it$ /fter about
three or four minutes of being in there she started to %hine$ 0er moms press the lights on
her %al#er and that calmed her$ She then reached for her moms hand %hile it %as
moving$ /fter pla"ing for about 1) minutes she began to smile and giggle lightl"$ 1eft
unattended the bab" girl started cr"ing, folding her hands and slobing ever"%here$ 0er
pacifier %as given to her and she got +uiet$ She %atched her siblings run and pla" around
her$ !he bab" dropped her pacifier and started suc#ing on her fingers$ She %as placed on
the floor and she started #ic#ing and pulling herself up %hile l"ing on her stomach$ !he
infant fell flat and got up and tried it again$ She then began to roll half %a" and then all
the %a" over$ She started tugging on a shirt and made noises similar to cooing$ 2eeding
time %as a success$ !he bab" held her bottle and drun# her formula %hile l"ing on her
side$ Soon after she %as burped she %as placed bac# on the floor %here her t%in brother
no% resided$ !he" stared at each other and tried to pull up$ She began cr"ing %hen her
brother drifted off to sleep$ She %as given her pacifier then she la" on her hands$ !he
bab" girl started rolling over until she spit up and laughed$ !he infant %as cleaned up and
placed bac# into her crib$ !hat concludes m" observation$ 3()*pm$
Interpretation4 5" interpretation of the Childs ph"sical development is that she
%as moving around freel" %ith ver" little struggle$ I also notice her being able to hold her
bottle %ith ease$ !he infant cognitive s#ills are developing as I stated she %as using one
of the first stages in language 6cooing7, she %as being ver" attentive to her care giver %ho
%as interacting %ith her %ith to"s$ !he child %as sociall" and emotionall" %hen she %as
smiling and grabbing the caregiver finger, also %hen she %as cr"ing %hen left
unattended$
