Audience: 24 homogenously grouped students in a twelfth grade Social Studies class in a suburban high school.
Subject: High School Social Studies-Grade 12 Topic: American Colonization
Objective: The students will be able to compare and contrast the British and American styles of government and explain what adaptations were made and why.
Standards: NJCCCS for Social Studies 6.1.12.A.1.a (NJCCCS, 2009) Standard: 6.1 U.S. History: America in the World All students will acquire the knowledge and skills to think analytically about how past and present interactions of people, cultures, and the environment shape the American heritage. Such knowledge and skills enable students to make informed decisions that reflect fundamental rights and core democratic values as productive citizens in local, national, and global communities.
Grade Level: By the end of grade 12
Strand: A. Civics, Government, and Human Rights
Content Statement: 1. Colonization and Settlement
CPI: 1a. Explain how British North American colonies adapted the British governance structure to fit their ideas of individual rights, economic growth, and participatory government.
Materials: textbook, pens/pencils, notebooks, power point slides, projector, screen, and do it now
Prerequisite Skills and Knowledge: The students will have knowledge of the British rule and style of government. Students know how to compare, contrast, and analyze differences. Students know how to make insightful observations based on previously learned materials as well as good note taking skills.
Anticipatory Set: As the children walk into the classroom, there will be a do it now assignment. The assignment will ask them to write in a bulleted format what they now about the British government and style of rule.
Input and Modeling: My way of inputting knowledge into the students would be a multi-prong approach. I would give a power point presentation and also have a time for reading the textbook. Rutz 2
I would also use the do it now assignment to start a discussion with the class and lead into the main portion of the lesson.
Guided Practice and Evaluation: The students would be broken up into two groups. The first group would write down the British style of government and the second group would write down the American style of government. After this first part is complete I would compare the two groups findings on the board, and then begin a class discussion on which government seems to work better. As all of this goes on I would be walking around helping the groups and making corrections if and when necessary.
Independent Practice and Evaluation: Each student would be told to take out a piece of paper and write down which of the two styles of government they felt was better and to write down how they would change it to make a more stable government for the good of the people. At the end I would collect the papers and grade them. As they work I would walk around to make sure they are working and to help them if need be.
Closure: As this class comes to an end please take out a piece of paper and simply write down which of the two forms of government you would lead towards, either American or British. Thank you all for being here and have a great day.
Accommodations: For any learning disabled students I would give them more time with the assignments and if need be let them do their class work for homework. I would also spend time with them one on one as everyone does their individual class work.
