Video Observation

Notetaking Tool
Observers name: Maggie Hayes Lesson observed: Aaron Conner-Lesson on coordinate grid
Purpose: To provide a framework for reflection and collaborative conversations about teaching and learning.

Directions: Read over the guiding questions below. As you view the video, jot down notes about what you see
and hear. Note any examples or evidence to support answers to the questions.

Student Engagement/Classroom Involvement Notes
1. How are students involved in the lesson?
What is the extent of student
involvement?
The students seemed to be very interested and excited
about what Mr. Conner had to say about everything!
I liked how you applied it to your life because it is
something that the kids are super interested in and they
enjoyed seeing the grid like a map
2. Were there opportunities for students to
ask questions? What kinds of questions
were they asking?
How did the teacher help students make
connections to what they were learning?
The students did not ask many questions but could have
if they had any. They were involved and wanted to give
more in-depth answers and all wanted to share.
He did a good job at connection coordinate grids and
the mathematical aspect to things in daily life-like a map
and how important it is to find things relevant. He
added the bus stop, the school, etc. and the students
would go rightdowncompared to the bus stop. He
would then reinforce how many they went up/down.
3. Describe the interaction in the classroom. Really good job with asking questions and making sure
that the students were following all along.
Many different students were given the opportunity to
go up to the Promethean board and share their thinking.
This kept the students engaged and participating (I did
notice though that at one point with kids going up-they
were all boys, probably just a coincidence). I did like
how the students also read the questions. They were
learning themselves as well as helping peers to others.
Student Learning Notes
1. What evidence do you see that indicates
student learning?
2. Was the learning outcome explicitly
conveyed to the students?

The students were able to answer questions, make
connections and solve the problems.
The learning outcome was to be able to understand the
purpose of a coordinate grid
3. What evidence did you see that the
learning goals were achieved?
4. How did the teacher monitor student
progress?

I was able to see the students comprehension of the
subject and their understanding when they went up to
the board and when they were working.
The teacher did a good job listening to what the
students had to say and bringing attention to any errors
they were making-brought them up to the board and
monitored there
Instruction
1. What is the teacher doing? (Facilitating,
lecturing, co-learning, etc.)
2. How was content/concepts presented to
students? Was there adequate
explanation of the concepts to ensure
student learning?
The teacher is facilitating learning as well as lecturing.
There is a lot of information being portrayed as well as
student involvement and interaction.
He called attention to things that he noticed that
students were doing right/wrong.
3. What kinds of questions did the teacher
ask?
What questions provided
opportunities for students to
explain, defend, compare,
evaluate?
Did the teacher wait for responses?
Probe for deeper understanding?
Did anyone get there a different way? Can you
show me how you got your answer?
Aaron did a good job at waiting for students to
respond-sometimes made a comment about
hurrying things along for time purposes.
Could probably have probed a little more for
deeper understanding but did a great job with
initial understanding..
4. What tasks are students doing? Did the
students have the opportunity to practice
their new knowledge or skill? Did the
practice help support the learning
outcome?
5. How did the teacher manage the learning
environment? (Procedures, securing
attention, time on task, etc)

I liked your opportunity to practice where the students
had an opportunity
He would make sure that the students were not getting
too loud or talkative. He did a good job at keeping
control of the class and I did not see that as a problem
at all
There were opportunities for students to practice
individually.

3 Affirmations based on the observations and evidences above

I can tell that the students really respect you and value what you have to say-you
do a good job at capturing their attention and communicating with them
You do a nice job at relating to the kids and making the information pertinent
and applicable to their lives
The students were able to see that you cared and were interested in what you
were teaching! Youre doing great!

2 Questions for Consideration
Is there a way that the students might could have worked in small groups for
extra individual practice to really talk about what they did/did not understand?
Would it help to have some of the work right there in front of the students so
that they can see it on their desks?
